November 20, 2016

Greetings Quashnet School Community.

This is certainly a short week!  Tomorrow is an early release day with student dismissal at 11:30 due to Parent/Teacher Conferences. Tuesday is a full day of school and then we are off for the Thanksgiving break. Please note that this post and the calendar will cover the week of November 28th as well.  I will not be sending out an update next Sunday, November 27th.

It is not too late to register for a conference - Use this link,  Register Here, to check for available times to see your child's teacher, special subject teachers, or Special Education teacher. Please note that all specialist will be available as a drop in as well if they are not scheduled for a conference.

Be on the lookout tomorrow for two notices going home. The first notice is to invite your family to participate in our annual Gingerbread Village display.  This is a great tradition at QS where classrooms and families create these creative sugary structures to fill our front hall.  This holiday weekend is a wonderful time to get creative and start building! The display is truly enjoyed by all!

The second notice is pictured to your left.  We hope you will join us for a family night on December 16th for dinner, a Gingerbread Village tour, cookie decorating, and to have a digital family photo taken from a Lifetouch photographer, the company that takes our student photos. It will be a fun night!

Did you see the School Committee meeting last Wednesday? Well, four of student council members, Jocelyn Cohen, Jack Spencer, Gabby Santos, and Katrina Mayen,  did an amazing job sharing a new Quashnet School initiative.  In case you didn't hear, Quashnet School students are going to be raising $14,000 to sponsor a service dog for a local veteran.  We are working in collaboration with Heroes in Transition.Under Mrs. Emery's leadership and the QS Student Council, students who earn Right Choice tickets can donate them to this cause, making another right choice! The ideas is for sponsors to match each ticket with a dollar to raise the funds. Sponsors can match any number of tickets. Our hope is to expand the right choice program and to add intrinsic value in doing the right thing.  The kick off date for this initiative is November 28th.  If you know of a business that would like to sponsor our students and reinforce right choices, please call the Quashnet office at 508-539-1550.  More information will be sent home soon.

We are very excited to introduce a new opportunity to Quashnet families. COMING SOON, date to be determined in January or February, 24 students from Yizhuang Elementary School, in the Daxing District in Beijing, China will be coming to Mashpee! The students range in age from 9-12 years old and are anxious to learn about the United States and make new friends.  We are working with BostonIvy Education who have successfully run this exchange program for several years.  Students will only be here for a short 10 day visit. As I get more specific details, we will be having an informational night with Boston Ivy to discuss this fabulous opportunity for those interested in possibly hosting a student. This is a fabulous learning opportunity for all of our students to expand their knowledge about a different culture and meet new friends!

Mashpee is connected community in many ways!  We are branching out on a global level.  The Chinese Exchange program is one way and the Starfish Foundation is another. Three of our fabulous teachers, Mrs. Pulsford, Mr. O'Connor and Mr. Rumberger, have teamed up to help support the Starfish Foundation. The Starfish Foundation is an educational nonprofit organization co-founded by Mrs. Pulsford's sister. Their mission is to help provide Ecuadorian youth an opportunity to achieve a post-secondary education.  At Quashnet, we are working to establish a pen pal program with Starfish to support our World Language initiative providing students a real word application for their Spanish skills.  To help support the Starfish Foundation, you will be receiving a coupon for Tuesday, November 29th for the Mashpee 99.  All you have to do is go to dinner and present the coupon.  A portion of the sales that night will go to this great cause.

We have TWO BIG WINNERS this week
