It’s not the years in your life that count; it’s the life in your years--Abraham Lincoln

GROWTH MINDSET: WITH TIME AND EFFORT I CAN IMPROVE!
Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.  Never stop challenging yourself.

I need to be seen.  I need to be heard.  I need to be respected.  I need to be safe.  I need to belong.  When all of my basic needs are met. . . then. . . I’m ready to learn.             (Anonymous)
Dear Quashnet School Community,
Last week we conducted two Code Red Drills--one that everyone knew about in advance and a second unannounced drill on Thursday.  Our school resource officer Will Cuozzo was present for both drills.  Although we don't like practicing these drills they are necessary and valuable.  We are very pleased with how both drills went.  Our students and staff are to be commended for their outstanding focus on safety.
A letter went home last Friday with each student detailing important information related to our online sign-up program for our November Parent/Teacher conferences.  Parents with emails in our system should have also received an email invite directly from Sign-Up Genius as well as an email from me with the letter attached.  Please contact the main office if you have questions or are having difficulty with the online program.  As we get closer to our conference time, any parent who has not yet signed up for a conference will be contacted by the main office, and an available appointment slot will be assigned.
This week is a shorter week for our students.  Monday is a half day for students; dismissal will take place at 11:30 AM.  Staff will be participating in professional development in the afternoon.  Friday is a no-school day for students.  Staff members will spend their morning working on curriculum and their afternoon learning about the instructional strategy--Accountable Talk.  We are very grateful to the Town of Mashpee for providing us with this valuable professional development time.  Don't forget that school will be closed next Monday for Columbus Day.
Reminder:  Please join me on Wednesday for our first Parent Coffee.  You can either choose to come in the morning (7:00 - 7:45 AM) or later in the day (5:15 - 6:00 PM), or both times if you want.  We will meet in the library.  I look forward to having the opportunity to sit together and engage in conversation with our fabulous parents.  Only by working together can we make our school better.
Congratulations to our newly elected student council officers (pictured below). All student candidates for these positions gave excellent speeches.  Also pictured below are fifth graders from Mrs. Mayen’s class who began their foreign language learning experience last week, logging on to the Middlebury Online Language program to study French and Spanish. C’est bon! Que bueno!

HALLOWEEN CANDY FOR OUR TROOPS
Mrs. Rastallis and Mrs. Blount are guiding our school-wide effort to collect Halloween candy and send it to our troops serving overseas.  This will be the 9th year for this very successful and worthwhile program.  Students will be asked to donate some of their Halloween candy to this cause.  After Halloween, families with leftover Halloween candy might choose to make a donation as well.  We are also collecting wet wipes, deodorant, chap sticks, beef jerky, cough drops, cotton swabs, toothbrushes, dental floss, socks, and travel size—shampoo, foot powder, toothpaste, soap + hand sanitizer. We are also seeking mailing sponsors—those willing to donate $15.00 to cover the cost of mailing one box.  Names and addresses for soldiers can be e-mailed directly to Mrs. Rastallis at jrastallis@mashpee.k12.ma.us, or forwarded to the office through a note to your child’s teacher.  Your support will be most appreciated.
QUASHNET’S VETERAN’S DAY ASSEMBLY AND LUNCHEON
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2014
WANTED:  Photos that include a family member who is a veteran or who is currently serving in the military—In preparation for our Veteran’s Day Assembly and Luncheon Celebration (Friday, November 7) we are requesting photographs of family members who have served or are currently serving in the military. Veterans do not have to be in uniform in the photo.  Although not necessary, we would love it if our Quashnet families are also included in the photos with the veteran/active military family member.  The people shown in the photo must be identified.  Please send the photograph to school in an envelope that includes your child’s name and homeroom.  We will do our best to get the photos back to you.  If you are able to scan photos, you can e-mail them to jrastallis@mashpee.k12.ma.us. All photos must be received by October 31.  If your military family member is able to join us on November 7th (10 -12 noon), please call Mrs. Pagano in the main office (ext. 4189).  More information related to this special event is being sent home on Monday, 10/6.

Be mindful and make the most of every moment of every day.
Let the important people in your life know how much you value them.
Work hard, be kind, and smile.

WE STILL NEED FAMILY PHOTOS FOR OUR FRONT DISPLAY CASES.  PLEASE SEND ONE IN IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE SO ALREADY.
With Gratitude,
Patty DeBoer
