January 16, 2022

Dear Quashnet School Community,

In observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., there is no school on Monday, January 17.  As you know, Dr. King was a civil rights leader who advocated for nonviolent resistance against racial segregation. The following two links are resources to share with your children that help explain his impact,  Martin's Big Words by Doreen Rappaport is a read-aloud HERE.  This book is a Caldecott Award winner and is good for all ages. Have you heard of Kid President? He is a very talented child who created this short video The Story of Martin Luther King, Jr., it is linked HERE

We are still in the COVID-19 surge, and there are many families dealing with isolation and quarantine. The National Association of School Psychologists publishes excellent resources for supporting children with multiple issues. This resource is specifically geared toward COVID-19.  I hope you find it helpful -  https://www.nasponline.org/resources-and-publications/resources-and-podcasts/school-safety-and-crisis/health-crisis-resources/helping-children-cope-with-changes-resulting-from-covid-19.  It is also a good perspective for adults.

For information related to MPS and COVID-19 protocols, please refer to Superintendent DeBoer's Friday Happenings - it is linked HERE

If your child comes home with a new hat, not to worry!  We were so fortunate to have received about 250 brand-new crocheted hats.  Last week, a selection of new hats was available at recess. If a student was cold or just wanted a hat, they were able to pick one.

Pictured here are three happy students keeping warm in their chosen hats.  We will continue to make hats available to any student who would like one.  Thank you to a wonderful, generous, and kind community member.

😊

Over the last 2 years, students have had greater access to the internet than ever.  To keep our kids safe, it is important to check their digital safety. Below are some reminders for families. It is important to check your child's devices for conversations and activities on Snap Chat, Google Duo, Tik Tok, and other apps between your child and their peers. Conversations around social media are not just a good idea, it is necessary.  What is being sent, and what is being received?

We are working to develop training for Grade 5 & 6 students and are looking to offer similar virtual training for parents/guardians. Thank you, SRO Hennessey, Instructional Technology Director Suzy Brooks, Deputy Cahill, and MPS Director of Guidance Lindsay Kett for working together to bring this important learning to the QS community.

Great use of technology is ST Math.
Here is an update from our ST Math Champion, Mrs. Pimental.

Session 2 Club Registration CLOSES this Thursday, January 20, 2022.  If your child would like to participate in a club, please click the link HERE to complete the Google registration form.

All clubs are FREE to students.  No supplies or equipment are needed.  Clubs meet after school from 3:35 -4:20 PM unless otherwise noted on the form.  Students may ride the late bus, be a parent/guardian pickup, or report to Adventure Club or B&G if they are members. Session 2 clubs will begin the first week of February and end the last week of May. Check the form for exceptions.  Due to the popularity of some clubs, we may need to split an offering into two sections as we try to accommodate as many students as possible.  Thank you for your understanding.  If you have any questions regarding a club, never hesitate to call the main office and we will get the answers you are looking for (508-539-1550). A complete list of clubs can be found on the form link above. Hard copies of the registration form have been distributed to students who requested them. The paper registrations also need to be received by Thursday, January 20.

Mr. Withington shared a few words of wisdom with students on Friday.
We all agreed it is sound advice!

ADVICE FROM A DOG

1. Delight in the simple joys of a long walk.
2. Unleash your talents.
3. Hide your favorite snacks.
4. Make new friends.
5. Learn new tricks no matter your age.
6. When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Wishing you all a wonderful long weekend.

Respectfully,

Principal O'Brien
