January 9, 2022

Dear Quashnet School Community,

I hope everyone was able to enjoy the first significant snowfall of the season. During lunches on Thursday, each grade level overwhelmingly was hoping for a good storm. It was an interesting discussion that snow days are not just about the amount of snow but also the time of day the snow accumulates.

Unfortunately, due to the weather, the QS Theatre Group had to cancel their outdoor performance that was rescheduled for yesterday, 1/8/22. The new plan is to film their production to share with families and classrooms.  Thank you to our thespians and Ms. Annessi for being so flexible. Hopefully, the Session 2 theatre group will have better luck with a live performance!

Due to the spike in COVID-19 cases, two other special events have been rescheduled. The VEX Robotics Competition has been moved to Saturday, January 29 @MMHS. The QS National Elementary Honor Society Induction has been rescheduled to Thursday, February 3 @ 5:30 PM.

For a thorough update on COVID-19, I have linked Superintendent DeBoer's Weekly Happenings HERE. You will find COVID updates, weekly safety checks(Pool Testing) information, daily symptom checks, and more. For the health and safety of all, please do not send your child to school if they have symptoms.

*This updated communication was shared today by Superintendent DeBoer:

Given the volume of communication (telephone calls and emails) that are being sent to our District COVID-19 Health Coordinator, Stacey Schakel, timely responses are no longer possible.  Until further notice, we are requesting that you send an email describing your situation to the address shown below--choosing the address that matches with the school where your child is a student or your workplace.  Using this email system for communication will allow additional members of our team to respond and provide guidance.  Please leave your name, a contact phone number, and a description of your situation in your email message.   Thank you.

We appreciate your communication, patience, and support.

AS A REMINDER, ANYONE WITH COVID-19 SYMPTOMS SHOULD NOT BE IN SCHOOL!  Symptoms were included in my Friday communication linked here.

The weather forecast this week is calling for an arctic chill. We do make every attempt to go outdoors for recess, and students should dress for the weather.  Hats, coats, and gloves are recommended.  The daily temperature is monitored and if the windchill is below 20 degrees, students will remain indoors. Mr. Kapulka does assign the gym to a few classes on a rotating basis on indoor recess days so students are able to be active.

There are fabulous offerings for Session 2 clubs!  Please click the link HERE to complete the Google registration form.  All clubs are FREE to students.  No supplies or equipment are needed.  Clubs meet after school from 3:35 -4:20 PM unless otherwise noted on the form.  Students may ride the late bus, be a parent/guardian pickup, or report to Adventure Club or B&G if they are members. Session 2 clubs will begin the first week of February and end the last week of May. Check the form for exceptions.  Due to the popularity of some clubs, we may need to split an offering into two sections as we try to accommodate as many students as possible.  Thank you for your understanding.  If you have any questions regarding a club, never hesitate to call the main office and we will get the answers you are looking for (508-539-1550). A complete list of clubs can be found on the form above.

One thing we can all agree on is that social media can be very powerful and influential. It is vitally important for parents/guardians to talk to children about the dangers of social media and to monitor their children's devices. A device is any tool that can text, take pictures, email, and/or access the internet which includes gaming.  Last year, I was able to participate in training, Keeping Kids Safe, which provided some resources for schools and families.  I hope you find this helpful. The resources at the bottom of this flyer are also very informative.  Just type the URL into your browser.

Last but certainly not least, Mr. Withington has put together a brief video of our "golden" years at Quashnet.  Mr. Withington and Keiki, will both be retiring as of this Friday, January 14.

Thank you Mr. W and Keiki - we will miss you both and wish you well.

Falcons Forever!

Respectfully,

Principal O'Brien
