November 7, 2021

Dear Quashnet School Community,

Daylight saving time ended today. It always amazes me how one hour can make such a difference. Enjoy that extra hour Monday morning!

This Thursday, November 11, is Veterans Day. School will be closed in observance of the holiday. A visit to the National Cemetary in Bourne is not only beautiful, but it is also a meaningful way to honor and remember our veterans.

Mashpee will also be honoring all veterans during a ceremony at the Mashpee Community Park across from the Town Hall on Thursday, November 11 at 10:00 AM.

"Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime." Visit https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/veterans-day-facts for more info.

We have several community-based projects in the works. See the details on the food drive, Halloween candy drive and Mashpee Has Your Back, backpack drive.

The collection starts this week for the "Fill the Van" Mashpee community food drive.  We are asking for students to bring in a non-perishable food item(s) this week through November 18th.  There will be a box by the Quashnet School entryway where food items can be dropped off.  Thank you for your help!

Monday, 11/8, is the last call for any Halloween candy donations. Students may drop any candy donations in the candy box by the front office. This year, Halloween Candy is For Heros.

Help support our local police and firefighters.

Thank you K-Kids for your community service!

There is always an opportunity for students to join K-Kids. Currently, they are a small but mighty group. K-Kids meet on Tuesdays from 3:35-4:20 PM. The late bus is available! Call or email the main office if your child would like to participate.

School safety is always the top priority at Mashpee Public Schools.
Last week, I asked students and staff to "Stay in Place."

What is "Stay in Place" and why would it be used?

"Stay in Place" is a notification to staff and students that they are to stay in their classrooms and out of the hallways. Students and teachers continue to engage in learning during this time.  A stay in place can be called for a number of reasons. It may be used to respond to a student or staff member in need. For example, if there is a medical emergency, we want to protect the privacy of that person. It is preferable to have students in the safety of their classroom with their teachers rather than having them observe something that could be upsetting. "Stay in Place" could also be as simple as someone throwing up in the hallway as another example of a building maintenance issue. Please know, it is NOT a lockdown or determined a threat.

If you or your child has any questions, please never hesitate to ask.

In case you have been wondering....every morning at school you or your children may see a cruiser
from the Barnstable County Sheriff's Office. We are SO fortunate to welcome Deputy Cahill from the Sheriff's Office back to Quashnet School as a GREAT instructor for our Grade 6 students.  Information on the GREAT Program can be found HERE

During GREAT classes, students engage in role-playing and discuss making safe choices. Grade 6 students participate in a 13 session program that includes a community service project.  Grade 5 students will have an introductory program with 6 sessions starting in the spring.

 Jiji is on the move!!

ST Math update 11/5/21

The ST in ST Math stands for spatial-temporal. When our kids are using ST Math they are using spatial-temporal reasoning.

“Research tells us three important things about spatial-temporal reasoning

  • It is a strong predictor of success at higher levels of mathematics and it connects to mathematics at all levels - from learning to count to calculus.

  • It is innate in humans - we all have spatial-temporal reasoning.

  • Spatial-temporal reasoning abilities can be increased - even if it is challenging for you now, you can improve with practice.

By challenging students to figure out how to manipulate objects in space and sequence, ST Math helps increase spatial-temporal reasoning and thus improves students’ understanding of math concepts.” -MIND Research Institute.

Our students average 8% progress across our school building and it is only November! Our goal is to reach 70% average progress by June. 15% progress for November will keep us on track.

Falcon Five Leaders are Recognized at Quashnet School!

At Quashnet School we follow the Falcon Five.

Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Ready, and Be Caring

As a school staff, we will be highlighting each of the five Falcon Five traits separately for a few weeks at a time.

The first Falcon Five expectation that we will focus on school-wide is the Be Safe expectation. This includes the ability to: practice self-control and good listening, use items as intended, report unsafe behavior, and conduct yourself in a safe manner at all times.

Additional examples of Being Safe includes students walking in the hallways appropriately, wearing their masks to cover both their nose and mouth, entering classrooms in a safe and quiet manner, are always where they are supposed to be, are safe on the playgrounds and fields, do not wear hoods/hats while in school, and treat each member of our community as they would like to be treated, and ask for help from a trusted adult if needed.

Teachers, paraprofessionals, administrative assistants, counselors, staff, and the administration will be looking for students that are exhibiting these behaviors and may reward them with a compliment, a Falcon Five Right Choice Ticket, a thank you, or a whole class compliment to their teacher and other positive sentiments.

Here at Quashnet School, our philosophy is what you pay attention to grows and that by acknowledging the positive with positivity our school will continue to be and grow as a safe productive environment for learning.

Please reinforce and discuss these expectations with your child(ren). Check-in with him/her/them to see if individually or as a class they have received any positive feedback about being safe. Thank you in advance for your support.

Parent/guardian Drop Off and Pick Up Routines

1.  Please have students prepared to get out of the car when you pull up to the curb.

2. Students should exit the car where you stop along the sidewalk.

3. Parents/guardians should stay in the car.

4. Please drive slowly and cautiously in one line. Passing is not safe for students who need to exit OR enter the driver's side of the car.

5. The line moves quickly, please be patient for safety.

6. When exiting the parking lot, if you are taking a right, please stay to the right, if taking a left, go into the left lane.  The exit does allow for two lanes.

Thank you for your cooperation and your focus on every students' safety.

A message from the PTO: Falcon Bucks are Back!

Please be on the lookout for the complete packet being sent home with students. Supporting Quashnet School PTO is supporting Quashnet School students!

Wishing you all a wonderful 4-day school week ahead.

Please take time to remember and thank a veteran for their service.

With gratitude,

Principal O'Brien
