May 31, 2020

Dear Quashnet School Community,

THANK YOU, PARENTS AND GUARDIANS, for ALL of your support and for your partnership with distance learning. With the utmost and heartfelt gratitude for what you are doing at home to support and encourage student engagement since the school closure in March. Teaching is a really hard job, but even harder when your children want you as a mom, dad,  grandparent, or a special caregiver and not the teacher too! I had a parent share the other day, "Well I'm not smarter than a fourth-grader." Although I know that is not true, I can imagine there are certainly days like that. Hang in there - tomorrow is June 1!

IMPORTANT DATES IN JUNE

June 1:  If you missed the pick-up date for student possessions, come to Quashnet School on June 1 between 11 am and 1 pm or between 4 and 5 pm. This is curbside delivery so just drive up outside the back of the school to the cafeteria door (Exit #8) and your child's belongings will be delivered to your car.

JUNE 8: Band students - If you are not continuing to play your instrument next year and it is a rental instrument, you may return it at Quashnet on June 8 from 11:00 - 11:30 am.

Please do not return your instrument if you are continuing next year, as the program is rent-to-own and returning it will reset your account to zero..

If you are returning your instrument, please do the following:
  • Contact Mrs. Boyd or Mrs. Hill and tell us you are returning your instrument
  • Contact Paul Weller, our instrument rep, and tell him you are returning your instrument (Shop. 781-582-1152
    Cell. 617-877-1070)
  • Label your instrument case with student name, parent name, phone number, and remove any personal items from the case.
June 18:  Last day of School -To recognize the end of the year, please join us for an end-of-the-year drive-through event at all three Mashpee schools. Staff members will be positioned around the outside perimeter of the building (with physical distancing) on that last day between 1:00 and 2:00 PM. The driving route will be marked. We have a special thank you and happy summer gift for students and staff to remember this very unique school year. Join the fun!

Report Cards will be sent home electronically to parents/guardians on June 18th. Class placements will be shared with families in August.

**The dates for year-end award distribution and yearbook distribution to be shared soon.

THANK YOU, PTO, for the 2019-2020 school year events! The last meeting of the year was last week. With the uncertainty of the upcoming year, both KCC and QS PTO have canceled the Back-to-School BBQ. This hard-working group will be looking for creative ways to support the students, staff, and families for the upcoming year.

One of the large purchases made by PTO this year is the gaga pit in the Quashnet playground. This new attraction was initiated by Mrs. Avtges and she worked hard with PTO and DPW to see it installed. Before the school closure, students were enjoying it tremendously.

In recognition of her effort and retirement this year, the PTO installed a plaque on the gaga pit naming it the Avtges Gaga Pit! So now we have our very own Lady Gaga!

Congratulations Mrs. Avtges and
thank you, PTO, for such a special recognition.

Please be aware of the images your child may be seeing on the news. It is best paired with a conversation. Answer their questions when you can and support their concerns.

I hope you are all staying well. Please know, we do recognize how hard the school closure is. We are certainly here to support you and we all need to assume positive intent. This is a new situation for all of us. It is important to know that you are not alone. Reach out - communication is so important. We are all doing the best we can - stick with it!

Take care,
Principal O'Brien
