March 8, 2020

Greetings Quashnet School Community,

Spring forward!  Daylight saving starts today. It is amazing how one hour can make a difference, but get ready, it will be an early morning on Monday. Having a later sunset is a great sign of spring!

If you have battery-operated fire alarms, now is a great time to change the batteries. The time is always right for fire safety.

Game on! Come and support Team Quashnet in their quest to keep the PTO Basketball trophy right here where it belongs - at Quashnet School!  Gameday is this FRIDAY, March 13, 2020, in the QS gym from 6:00-8:00 PM. A great half time show is planned. It is sure to be a FABULOUS event and it's ALWAYS a lot of FUN!

Friday is MASHPEE SPIRIT Day -
show your school and town spirit!

As I am sure you can imagine, there has been a lot of conversation around the school regarding the coronavirus. Please know that we are working hard to keep both our facility clean and encouraging hand washing for all. We are fortunate to have school psychologist, Mrs. Brown, on staff who shared a great resource for parents. Please click on this helpful link with parent/guardian recommendations: Talking to Children about Covid-19: A Parent Resource.

It is that time of year to reserve a 2019-2020 Quashnet School Yearbook. It can be purchased online at ybpay.lifetouch.com with the QS ID code # 9872820. You will be able to place your online order through April 12, 2020. The yearbook includes great candid memories from the school year. Each classroom is featured with the students' school photo. Thank you, Mrs. Johnson, for your continued work in creating this wonderful keepsake!

Do you ever wonder what the staff does on an early release day? Tomorrow, March 8, the Quashnet staff will receive training on administering the upcoming ELA MCAS. There are very specific guidelines that must be adhered to in preparation for testing and on testing days. Each year, there are some changes in these regulations. Having this professional time allows all staff to be trained together to ensure compliance with test administration and to provide the best testing environment for students.  We understand that half-days can be challenging in terms of child care, but know that this time is valued, appreciated, and planned to support positive student outcomes.

Be sure to check out the photo tab above for adorable pictures from a Read Across America event (thank you, Mrs. McBrien). Sixth-grade students joined first-grade students at KCC to celebrate the joy of reading. It is wonderful to see our sixth-graders be such positive Falcon Five role models!

March Madness is alive and well at Quashnet School...ELA style! Each grade-level has selected four poems.  Students will read and critique poems, vote on their favorites until we get to our "poem" champion!  The sweet sixteen poems are listed below. Thank you to the QS ELA Committee for organizing this fun March reading event.

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.  Hope to see you on Friday night!

Respectfully,
Principal O'Brien
