February 9, 2020
Dear Quashnet School Community,
Monday, February 10, 2020, is an early release day for students. Student dismissal will be at 12:30 PM. Please send in a note if there is a special dismissal plan for your child(ren).
Just a reminder - if your child is not going to be in school on a given day, either a call or email is requested informing us of the absence. The email address to report an absence is qsattendance@mpspk12.org. Please include your child's full name and reason for the absence in the email. Notification received before 9:00 AM will avoid an automated call being sent out.
In an effort to be more environmentally responsible, we have three new water fountains at Quashnet School. As you can see in the picture to the right, each of the new water fountains has a water bottle filler. No need for plastic bottles in Mashpee Public Schools! Students are welcome to have a water bottle in class. The green light on the unit counts the number of plastic water bottles that have been saved by using the device. It will be great to see that number grow!
Meet JiJi from ST Math |
A description of the program on the ST Math website explains, "ST Math starts by teaching the foundational concepts visually, then connects the ideas to the symbols and language. With visual learning, students are better equipped to tackle unfamiliar math problems, recognize patterns, and build conceptual understanding. Without language barriers, the problem is accessible to all students, regardless of skill level or language background."
On the program's website, https://www.stmath.com, there is a parent link with a wealth of information and resources to support math education at home.
$3,695 was raised this week for the American Heart Association through Jump Rope for Heart. WOW!!!
Thank you, Quashnet School National Elementary Honor Society and Mrs. Babich for organizing this event and to all the families and students who participated in this worthwhile cause.
At QS, "Jump Rope for Heart" is a very loose term - our kids participated in a variety of ninja warrior activities. Check out a few of the pictures on the photo tab above.
You will also find an assortment of photos from a Grade 4 field trip to the Cotuit Center for the Arts. Each year, our art teacher, Mrs. Richards, organizes a visit to the CCftA for Grade 4 students. Being a local trip, parents are welcome to attend and learn about the special exhibit alongside their child and even create art together in a special activity - this year's theme was superheroes.
Friday, February 14th is Valentine's Day! As with each holiday, please support the MPS Wellness Policy - candy, cupcakes, and treats should not be sent into school.
Please check with your child's teacher regarding valentine cards in the classroom.
Mark your calendar for Quashnet School's Annual
Family Night on Thursday, February 27, 2020,
from 6:00-7:30 PM.
Teachers have planned amazing new activities and favorite stations will be back for the whole family to enjoy!
School will be closed between February 17-21,
classes will resume on Monday, February 24, 2020.
If you are staying home or going away over the vacation week, it is a great time for students to READ books of their choice! Quashnet School participates in this reading incentive program where students are asked to log six hours or more of reading time between Dec 17th - April 17th. Reading to a younger sibling, cousin or friend counts! Each student who participates will earn a certificate and a coupon for one free admission to Six Flags New England over the summer. It is easy to register - just go online to sixflags.com/books and use the QS code: E3NZU.
There are several special events for children over the vacation week at Mashpee Public Library- a calendar of events can be found on their website. https://mashpeepubliclibrary.org.
Happy reading!
I will not be posting to the Blog next Sunday due to the vacation - the next post will be on Sunday, February 23, 2020. I hope you all have a fabulous week ahead. Wishing you all a safe and relaxing February break.
Respectfully,
Principal O'Brien
Happy Valentine's Day |
