September 15, 2019

Dear Quashnet School Community,

It was wonderful to see so many families at the BBQ last Friday. Thank you so much to the QS and KCC PTOs for all of their hard work in organizing this outstanding family event. A huge thank you to Dino for his continued generosity as well as all the businesses who help to sponsor this community picnic including those below.

Open House was well attended on Thursday. If you were not able to make it, reach out to your child(ren)'s teacher through email or with a phone call. Staff emails begin with the first-initial of the first-name followed by the last name@mpspk12.org (ex. mobrien@mpspk12.org). Home/school communications will support your child's academic success. FYI - Parent/Teacher Conferences are earlier this year and are scheduled for Thursday, October 24th and Tuesday, October 29th - electronic sign-ups are forthcoming.

Did you know that the MPS theme of the month is to be READY?  We are all working on being ready to learn, ready for our day, and ready for excellence. The best way for families to help be ready is to stay connected. Hopefully, you read the Blog weekly. You can also stay informed through the MPS website, follow us on Twitter, download the new MPS app in the App Store. I have attached the QuashNetWork form to the Sunday email for your quick reference.

After school clubs begin this week. I have added the schedule to the Week at a Glance tab above.  If you did not get a call or a confirmation slip home with your child regarding participation in the clubs, please call Mrs. Pagano in the main office at (508) 539-1550 x4189.  She will be able to confirm club participation and dates.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) -
Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset

"Over 30 years ago, Carol Dweck and her colleagues became interested in students' attitudes about failure. They noticed that some students rebounded while other students seemed devastated by even the smallest setbacks. After studying the behavior of thousands of children, Dr. Dweck coined the terms fixed mindset and growth mindset to describe the underlying beliefs people have about learning and intelligence. When students believe they can get smarter, they understand that effort makes them stronger. Therefore they put in extra time and effort, and that leads to higher achievement." (from: https://www.mindsetworks.com/science/).

Consider using the phrases and ideas below during homework time - promoting the growth mindset and home and school will reinforce this flexible thinking.

Have a great week ahead -

Respectfully,
Principal O'Brien
