September 8, 2019

Dear Quashnet School Community,

The photo tab above has a lot of great photos from the first day and first week of school. Students were engaged in a number of getting to know you activities and team-building tasks. This is truly time well spent. Students who feel connected, build positive relationships with teachers and peers will increase their success in school. "Taking time to get to know our students isn't fluff time, it's academic time." Dr. Justin Tarte @edutopia.

The Quashnet School team is looking forward to welcoming you during Open House this Thursday, September 12th, from 6:00 - 7:30 PM. This is an important night for parents/guardians to meet your child's teachers, learn about expectations, communication strategies, and ways to support your child's academic journey. Along with their homeroom teacher, students also have six additional specialized teachers for PE, art, music, Library, STEM, and Health (Gr. 5&6) or Enrichment (Gr. 3&4). Understanding expectations and connecting with ALL of your child's teachers is recommended. Please join us for a brief community meeting in the gym prior to going to classrooms.

Friday, September 13th, is a great community day. The QS and KCC PTO are hosting the Back to School BBQ right on the field between the two schools.  Festivities begin at 5:00 PM.  Please park in front of the school - for safety sake, we need to avoid parking near the playgrounds.

The extended school-day clubs are available for sign up!  Please use this link to see the offerings and to register:  Session 1 ClubsClubs are filled on a first-come-first-serve basis. A note will be sent home prior to the start of clubs confirming a students participation in the club along with the dates. If the club is extremely popular, it may be split into two 8-week sections rather than 1 session for 16 weeks. We will do our best to accommodate as many students as possible. There is no cost to participate in clubs - another reason why it's GREAT to be in Mashpee

Please note - The late buses will start this coming Tuesday, September 10th and be available for students on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Students sign up during their lunch to ride the late bus. These two buses cover the entire town, so depending on who rides the bus, it is hard to give an exact time of their arrival home. Our drivers are very efficient and plan their routes to get students home as soon as possible. FYI - there is a stop at the Boys and Girls Club.

The extended-day music program for Grades 5 & 6 begins this week.  Strings meet on Tuesday, Band students meet on Wednesday, and Chorus will meet on Thursday (Chorus is for Grade 4-6). Please be sure to send in a note with dismissal instructions for students participating in any music program.  Flag football for Grades 5 & 6 also begins this week. A paper registration was sent home last week.

Should you have any questions regarding the extended-day offerings please call (508-539-1550) or stop in the Quashnet School office.

If your child takes medication, uses an inhaler, needs an epi-pen, has allergies, or other ongoing health concern, PLEASE be in touch with Nurse Kristin, the Quashnet School nurse. By law, she is unable to administer medication without the proper paperwork from a doctor. Doctors' orders must be new for the new school year.  Nurse Kristin will be available during Open House or call her at 508-539-1550 x 4155.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is not only a buzz word in education, but it is an important focus to meet the needs of the whole child. We must recognize that if a child's social-emotional needs are not met, their personal learning is negatively impacted. One way we are addressing SEL at Quashnet School is through the use of Calm Classroom. The purpose of this curriculum is to help students be calm, focused, and be ready to positively participate in their day. Each lesson takes less than 3 minutes and supports our Falcon Five traits of being Ready, Responsible, and Safe.

Wednesday is September 11th, a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Thank you to FIRST RESPONDERS for ALL YOU DO for our community, families, students, and staff. We salute you!

Looking forward to seeing you this Thursday and Friday!

Respectfully,
Principal O'Brien
