Happy May Quashnet School Community!

This week brings the mid-term of Term 3 so that means time to check Progress Reports! To check on your child's progress, sign into PowerSchool on Thursday, May 9th, and all grades will be up to date. If you have any questions, please be sure to check in with your child's teacher.  Email is easy - all staff can be reached by typing in the person's first initial followed by their last name@mpspk12.org (i.e. mobrien@mpspk12.org).

It is MCAS time again!  This Wednesday and Thursday ALL Quashnet students will be participating in the Mathematics MCAS.  Each grade level will have two testing sessions.  Sessions are scheduled for 90 minutes, however, MCAS is UNTIMED.  Students may have up to the end of the school day to test.
Important reminders for testing:

  1.  Take time to read each question for understanding
  2.  Use scrap paper to problem-solve and complete calculations
  3.  Check answers for reasonableness
  4.  Answer questions completely
  5.  Do not leave any questions blank
Stress can be a factor during testing days, but there are a few things to do help your child be prepared.  One is to have a good night sleep before the test.  Having a healthy breakfast in the morning with protein will help with energy and stamina. Telling your child you believe in them and encouraging them to do their best will help build confidence. It is also important to note that MCAS is based on standards and skills students have worked on this year.  There are no tricks in testing, just careful reading for meaning and application of skills learned. It is time to show what you know - Mashpee Children Are Smart!

Reminder:  Please be to school on time for testing days.  Once a session begins, students will not be able to enter a classroom late. Thank you for your help with this.

Congratulations to our 2019 Spelling Bee Champs!

1st Place - Ayesha Shafi
2nd Place - James Benners
3rd Place - Leny Jean Laguna

Thank you to all the student participants. It was obvious how each student studied and prepared for the event.  Well done!  Thank you to Mr. O'Connor, who does an amazing job as emcee, Mrs. Emery for her organization of the event, staff volunteers who facilitated the preliminary rounds, and families who supported all of our spellers.  T-h-a-n-k  y-o-u!

Mrs. Richards is on the lookout for Square 1 Art orders.  All orders must be submitted by Friday, May 10th.  Last week, each student received free stickers with their order packet.  All proceeds from this fundraiser go to support the Quashnet School Art Department and past projects have allowed us to install the beautiful tile murals in our school.  Thank you for your support.

In case you missed this last week:
Classroom Placement for the 2019-2020 School Year

In order to build well-balanced classrooms, use the most current student data, and plan for students moving into or out of the district, both KCC and Quashnet School will be sending out classroom placement for the upcoming school year in August, not on students' final report card. That being said, I will be working on preliminary classroom lists before the of the school year to ensure teacher input. If you would like to share any information regarding placement for your child, please send me a brief email at mobrien@mpspk12.org by May 15th. I cannot guarantee a specific teacher request, but your input is valued and will be considered in determining placement.

Every day at Quashnet School I have the pleasure and honor to see a team of highly skilled teachers and dedicated staff interact with students on every level.  They challenge students to think critically, develop opinions, problem solve, and question. They coach students in peer relations, support positive choices, reinforce student confidence and work on skill building in all areas.

Team Quashnet is here for students first and it shows every day.  This week is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week - and I am honored to share my day with this outstanding team of people. Thank you Team Quashnet for all you do!

Don't forget Mother's Day, Sunday, May 12th! 💝

Have a great week everyone!

Respectfully,
Mrs. O'Brien, Principal
