April 28, 2019

Greetings Quashnet School Community,

If April showers truly bring May flowers, we are going to have a remarkable month of May!

A reminder that tomorrow, Monday, April 29, is an early release day.  Student dismissal is at 11:30 AM. If there are any changes in dismissal plans, please be sure to send in a note with detailed instructions.

On Tuesday, April 30, there will be a Community Awareness Night at MMHS from 5:30-7:30 PM. This program is geared toward parents and guardians of Grades 6-12 students but is open to all those interested. Topics include information and resources on Vaping, Safe Use of Technology and Social Media, Childhood Sexual Assault/Abuse, Support Programmings such as Gosnold, Children's Cove, Family Continuity, and other resources. There will also be a  Hidden In Plain Sight Exhibit which is a simulation of a teenage bedroom and provides a hands-on experience to support families in recognizing the signs of potential substance use and/or abuse. This exhibit serves as an invaluable resource for families.

The Spelling Bee is coming to Quashnet School Thursday evening, May 2nd.  The preliminary rounds start at 5:30 PM.  The Final rounds will take place in the Quashnet cafeteria starting at 6:00 PM. Words are generated from the Scripps National Spelling Bee list with additional "frequently misspelled" words. Thank you Mrs. Emery and Mr. O'Connor who lead this event. It is sure to be a nail biter!

Congratulations to three of Quashnet School's amazing poets. Three Grade four students were recognized by Veterans for Peace, Voices of Peace poetry contest.  Madalyn Damron earned First Honors, Fernanda Lima Second Honors, and Oliver Josselyn earned Honorable Mention. Be sure to read their award-winning poems on the photo page. Excellent job!

We need YOU!

The Quashnet School's annual Career Day is scheduled for Friday, May 24th. This is an opportunity to share your chosen profession and the educational path you took to get there with Quashnet students. You can share with one class, two, or stay for the day.

Help us "plant the seed" of career possibilities for Quashnet students.  Contact Cheryl MacIntire,  in the Quashnet School office for planning and/or questions at  cmacintire@mpspk12.org or by phone at 508-539-1550.  Be a part of this fun and educational day for all.  Requested RSVP by May 1st.

Has it been hard to attend Town Meeting?  This year, on May 6th, there will be babysitting available at MMHS. Let your voice be heard and your vote count at Town Meeting - Monday, May 6th @ MMHS starting at 7:00 PM.

A note from your Quashnet PTO Board:

At our April Meeting, the PTO was able to approve funding for the 6th Grade year-end BBQ and T-shirt signing party. This year-end party is a great way for the students to have a memorable send-off from Quashnet to the Middle School and we’re happy we can help continue the tradition!

The STAFF APPRECIATION LUNCHEON is fast approaching! On Tuesday, May 7, 2019, the PTO will be providing lunch on Teacher Appreciation Day to thank our teachers and the staff at Quashnet for all they do for our children.  We ask for your help to provide “Tropical” themed baked goods and/or water and beverages. If you would like to help or donate, please email Tracy Fischer at qsptopresident@gmail.com or Cori Johnson at amiayajo@gmail.com.

Our first ever FAMILY GAME NIGHT will be Friday, May 10, 2019.  Please be sure to RSVP by May 1st to join us for what we hope will be a fun family event!

PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING THE QUASHNET PTO BOARD! We are in DESPERATE need of a President, Vice-President, Corresponding Secretary, and Treasurer. With only one board member returning next year, we need at least three board members for there to be a board. If there is no board, events like the Book Fair, the Staff Appreciation Lunch, funding for Field Trips, Supplies, Guest Speakers and Performances, and other events for your children will disappear! Please consider coming to our next meeting on May 22nd and learn what the commitment to the PTO really is like, or reach out to any of the current Board Members and we’ll be happy to talk to you!

Classroom Placement for the 2019-2020 School Year

In order to build well-balanced classrooms, use the most current student data, and plan for students moving into or out of the district, both KCC and Quashnet School will be sending out classroom placement for the upcoming school year in August, not on students' final report card. That being said, I will be working on preliminary classroom lists before the of the school year to ensure teacher input. If you would like to share any information regarding placement for your child, please send me a brief email at mobrien@mpspk12.org by May 15th. I cannot guarantee a specific teacher request, but your input is valued and will be considered in determining placement.

Wednesday, May 1st, is National Decision Day which means the pressure is on for high school seniors to make final college decisions.

Please join Mr. Bedard, Mrs. Weston, and all the teachers as we celebrate this day by wearing college gear on Wednesday, May 1st.

Before signing off for the week, I would like to thank the dedicated and always professional administrative assistants at Quashnet School.  We are so fortunate to have the support of Mrs. MacIntire, Mrs. Wunder, Mrs. Emery, and Mrs. Pagano. They work to help families, support students, staff, and teachers.  Each one takes on special projects to include our Veterans Day celebration, the Gingerbread Village and Christmas Parade, Career Day, the Spelling Bee on top of their numerous daily responsibilities.

We are truly fortunate to share our day with these wonderful people. Thank you for ALL you do!

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.

Respectfully,
Mrs. O'Brien, Principal
