March 3, 2019

Dear Quashnet School Community,

Be our guest!  Tomorrow morning, Monday, March 3, please join me for an informal coffee and conversation starting at 8:15 AM to 9:00 AM.  Learn what's new at Quashnet School or come with any questions you may have.  Enjoy a hot cup of coffee or tea with a delicious treat on a snowy (or rainy ☺) morning.  Looking forward to seeing you there!

Have you heard about Momo yet?  This is a terrible online pop-up intended to scare people. There has been playground talk of this recently so our kids are getting exposed to it on some level.  The following link will bring you to an article meant for parents and guardians https://www.forbes.com/ . Overall the message in the article is to educate children about internet safety and to have these important safety conversations at home. It is worth the read.

Please support the efforts of the Quashnet School K-Kids who are collecting “Pennies for Patients” to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  This year’s school-wide goal is $2019 dollars.  If the school, as a whole, raises over $750, the homeroom that raises the most money will receive a pasta party sponsored by Olive Garden.

I hope you all had a wonderful time at STEAM Night last Thursday.  It was wonderful to see so many families and students participating in each engaging activity.  Be sure to check out some great pics on the photos tab above.

What clever engineering designs for the egg toss, kick, throw, and hit challenge!  It was amazing to see such creative designs - and to think about 80% of the eggs survived.
The estimation jars are always a favorite station - congratulations to the following estimators:

     127 Skittles - James Benners
     308 Eraser - Aubrey Pells
356 Animal Crackers - Esme Milde
123 Pens and Pens - Vincent Coscia
317 Life Savers - Abigail Glen

Last Friday, several Grade 6 classes visited the KCC School to read with first-grade book buddies.  This is such a win-win opportunity for students to build confidence and make connections.  Our fifth-graders visited MMHS to work on an underwater robotics project with high school students. Having grade span partnerships expose our students to a variety of learning opportunities that enrich all of our Mashpee learners.

In an effort to communicate all the great work that the QS PTO Board does, I will be posting the monthly meeting notes on the Blog.  The PTO is an organization that supports EVERY student in our school.  The PTO is only as strong as the members who participate.  PLEASE consider participating in this cause.  As you will see in the notes, a meeting is approximately 1 hour per month.   Check out the January minutes and you will see all the ways PTO enriches the school experience for our students.  FYI- Board members are needed!          PTO Minutes, 1/9/2019

Key concept to Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

Kids do well if they can...
if they can't, something is getting in the way. We
need to figure out what so we can help.

It is skill not will and we need to teach the skills.  Example:  a two-year-old is difficult because they don't have the same skill level to regulate their emotions.  Those skills are taught over time and we all learn at varying rates.  Kids do well if they can.

A reminder that Monday, March 4, 2019, is an early release day.  Student dismissal is at 11:30 AM.  Please send in a note with any changes to a regular dismissal plan.

Wishing you a wonderful week ahead.

Respectfully,
Mrs. O'Brien, Principal
