Parent/Guardian Resource
A couple of weeks ago there was a Parent Tech Night at QS. Although not many people were able to attend, I do know from our conversations that social media is a real concern for many people. Frequent questions include, how to keep up with changing apps, how to limit phone use/screen time with my child, etc.  One of the points of discussion that evening was about monitoring and limiting phone use. Two apps were shared as helpful tools for parents. In case you are looking for help, check these out:  1. https://www.netnanny.com/  2.http://www.phonesheriff.com/. Thank you, Colleen Terrill, Suzy Brooks, and Chris Santos, for sharing valuable information and to our MMHS students who participated in the discussion on student apps and their own experiences with social media. It was an interesting discussion.

The following link is an article shared by Nurse Stacey (KCC) on the dangers of vaping.  https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/16/health/vaping .  Although this focuses on teenagers, you can never be too aware or have these conversations too early with your children.  They are exposed to these risky and unhealthy behaviors too soon.

There is a GREAT opportunity for students between the ages  of 11-18 at Mashpee Public Library.  We are so fortunate to have this fabulous resource in our community.  Books, technology, programs - all for free!  Take advantage of this community partner.

Kids who read, 20 + minutes per day not only perform better on standardized tests but outperform their peers academically.

INVEST in READING!

Grade 6 students and parents are invited to a Program of Studies Night at MMHS on December 4th @ 6:00 PM. You will meet the administration and teachers.  It is the first of several opportunities your child will have as they start to transition to the middle school. It is a very informative night that shouldn't be missed!

Be sure to mark your calendars for Thursday, December 13th. The Quashnet School welcomes our families to join us for a delicious pasta dinner, cookie decorating, and get a complimentary family photo taken by Life Touch photographers, and... you never know who might break out in song! It is a wonderful opportunity to view the Gingerbread Village. RSVP requested - more to come!

RECESS and Winter Weather -
Every effort will be made to have students go outside for recess throughout the winter months. If the outside temperature is 20 degrees or higher, we will go outside.  Dressing in layers is recommended and shorts are not appropriate.  Please have children dress for the cold or dress in layers. Thank you for your support.

GRADE 5&6
Coming soon: Indoor soccer intramurals, beginning the week of December 11th. Sign-ups will be sent to you electronically.  Grade 5 meets on Tuesdays, 2:45-4:00 PM and Grade 6 on Wednesdays, 2:45-4:00 PM. No late bus is available - parent pick-up or B&G only.

Over the last several weeks, I have been sharing some strategies we are using at QS to support SEL, Social Emotional Learning. Why aren't we focusing on just academics? Well, the research actually supports SEL as a benefit to academic success! In an article in Educational Leadership, October 2018, the data from multiple studies were shared in the article SEL: What the Research Says.  The following are some of the findings:

  • SEL programs enhance academic achievement.  Students who participated in SEL programming translated into an 11-13 percentile-point gain in achievement.
  • Students who participated in SEL programming showed significantly more positive outcomes in 6 domains: social and emotional skills, attitudes toward self and others, positive social behavior, conduct problems, emotional distress, academic performance.
  • Students that were followed through adolescence and into young adulthood found that SEL program participants continued to show positive adjustments, more graduated from high school and attended college, and fewer had been arrested.
The key is a having a universal SEL program K-12, which is being addressed currently in MPS. Another reason why "It's great to be in Mashpee!"

Leadership, compassion, empathy, and caring are some of the qualities that Quashnet students and staff showed in our drive a couple of years ago to purchase a service dog for a local veteran. We were able to raise $14,000 and worked with Heroes In Transition who recently were able to match a dog and a local veteran who needed each other.  This was a longer process than we realized, but we were thrilled to receive word that a match was made!  We all have the power to do something to help someone else.  Wishing them both a beautiful friendship. Thank you Team Quashnet!

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.  I look forward to seeing you during Parent/Teacher Conferences.

Respectfully,
Mrs. O'Brien, Principal
