Dear Quashnet School Community,
I hope this mid-August check-in finds you all well and that you are enjoying this hot summer season. We are so fortunate to live in an area surrounded by water. Whether you choose the pond, ocean, or both, it sure has been a pleasure to cool off in this heat.
Although we still have a few weeks left of summer, there are some important school updates I want to share. To begin, I am very excited to share that Mr.
Brian Kehrl has joined the Quashnet School team as our new assistant principal. Mr. Kehrl is coming to Quashnet School from Mashpee Middle-High School, where he worked for 10 years, most recently as an English teacher and head of the English department. Prior to working in education, Mr. Kehrl was a journalist, a ski instructor, an aquaculture field hand, and a carpenter. Outside of school, Mr. Kehrl likes to be active and be outside, especially with his family. He is most excited to be moving down Old Barnstable Road to join the powerhouse team of educators and a great community of students and families at Quashnet School. He looks forward to meeting you. Mr. Kehrl can be reached at 508-539-1550, ext. 4187 or bkehrl@mpspk12.org.

Teacher assignments were mailed to families on Thursday, August 11. If you do not receive your child(ren)'s placement letter please contact the Quashnet School office and we will confirm your mailing address in PowerSchool. Grade 3 placement letters also included an invitation to Grade 3 Scavenger Hunts. The scavenger hunts are a great opportunity for our incoming third graders to visit Quashnet School and learn about their new learning environment. Scavenger hunts are organized by homerooms, but if you have a conflict with your child's scheduled time, please just give us a call at 508-539-1550.
Only your child(ren)'s homeroom teacher is listed in the placement letter. The table below shows teachers who are teaming together. Mark your calendars for the Quashnet School Open House scheduled for Thursday, September 15 at 6:00 PM so you will not only meet your child(ren)'s teacher(s) but also see their new learning environment and understand the grade level expectations.
*We are very excited to welcome new staff members to the Quashnet School team.
Last year, Mr. O'Connor retired, Ms. Warren and Mr. Loyko relocated out of state, and Ms. A. Keohane has taken a new position in the district working in both the KCC School and QS. These skilled educators will be missed, but we do wish them all the best in their new endeavors.
It is great to know that school lunches will once again be free to all students for this coming school year. I would suggest still having a lunch box for students to bring a healthy snack to school each day and a water bottle. Another necessary school item that is needed every day is a backpack. We are so fortunate to receive brand-new backpack donations every year. Please contact me directly if that would be a help to your family. I can be reached at 508-539-1550 or mobrien@mpspk12.org.
We know it is GREAT to be in Mashpee, and here is another reason why - you do not need to buy markers, crayons, pencils, pens, or a daily planner. Students will be given those supplies. If there is something your child needs specifically, their classroom teachers will share those items with you. Please do not purchase big binders or a backpack with wheels - they are too big and do not fit in the lockers.
The best, very best way to prepare for back to school is to have your child read each day. Check out the Mashpee Public Library for a FABULOUS selection of books. Reading recommendations also be found on the Massachusetts Children's Book Award website or Facebook page. "Massachusetts Children’s Book Award honors books that promote reading for pleasure among students 4th-6th grade. We release a list of 25 nominees from which MA students pick their favorite each year! MCBA is sponsored by Salem State University."
Along with reading, practice those math facts! Math facts are to math like the alphabet is to reading. If a student spends too much time thinking about the facts they don't get to problem-solving at the same level. Skip counting, fact songs, games, and online apps can help make fact memorization fun. It will make a difference in readiness to engage in deeper learning!
The first day of school for students is BEFORE LABOR DAY! We look forward to welcoming students back to school on Wednesday, August 31. Mashpee Public Schools will be closed on Friday, September 2, and Monday, September 5, in observance of Labor Day, then back to school on Tuesday, September 6. Please click here https://www.mpspk12.org/district/calendar to see the District calendar and the yearly calendar.
As always, if you have any questions never hesitate to call, email, or stop in. Blog posts will be shared weekly on Sundays at 5:00 PM.
Enjoy the rest of the summer!
Respectfully,
Principal O'Brien
