June 17, 2018

Dear Quashnet School Community and Grade 2 Families,

It is a hard time of year to say good-bye to our wonderful sixth graders.  I can honestly say, they are ready to spread their Falcon wings and soar at Mashpee Middle School. On Friday, Athletic Director Triveri visited with the sixth graders along with the fall sports coaching team.  Each interested student met with the team coach and was given papers necessary to play sports in the fall.  Please look for those papers, complete them, and get them to the middle school. Clearly, not every student in interested in a sport, but there are numerous clubs, music, art and tech opportunities.  It really doesn't matter what a student participates in, just that they do!  We will miss you Grade 6, and we will look forward to reading, seeing, and sharing in all of your future successes!

On the other end of the spectrum, second graders joined us for lunch at Quashnet
last Wednesday.  It was great to meet all the new and excited students heading our way.  They were polite, quiet when asked, and did a fabulous job navigating the cafeteria.  Thank you KCC and families for preparing the students for Grade 3.  We look forward to welcoming them and watching them grow over the next four years.

With only two and a half days left of the year, it can be challenging for students.  Schedules and routines are off and not as predictable as usual. Support with reinforcing the Falcon Five is always appreciated:  Be safe, respectful, responsible, ready, and caring.  If we are ALL Falcon Five followers it will be a GREAT end of the year!

CONSTRUCTION UP DATE:

As of Thursday, June 21, 2018, the Quashnet School will be turned over the contractors to move full force with the repair project.  They will continue to replace windows, the bathrooms are being upgraded to become ADA compliant, and the roof is being replaced.  Quashnet will be fenced off and not accessible - including the playgrounds.  The Quashnet office will be relocated to the Kenneth C. Coombs guidance suite for the summer.  We do have an anticipated return date of mid August.  I will send out a notice when we return.  If you do need to contact the office or me for any reason, our phones will be forwarded to KCC and email will not change. Please know that the project will be continuing into the fall. There is too much work to complete over the summer. I will provide an update prior to school starting.

Prevent the summer slide! Research shows students who read 20 minutes a day over the summer, maintain their growth and skills learned over the school year.  This is critical! Quashnet School has partnered with Mashpee Public Library in the Libraries Rock program.  Students log their minutes, can participate in library activities, and stay strong. Follow this link explaining the program:  https://friendsofmashpeelibrary.org/childrens-events/

Another reading log option is the New England Patriots Reading Blitz. Log those reading minutes in both places and earn rewards!  Easy, fun, and KEEP THOSE SKILLS! The following link is the Patriots Summer Reading Blitz registration:  https://www.patriots.com/community/rbtl - this is TIME SENSITIVE - register now!

You can engage in math skills in so many ways. Play games and be the banker, card games are great, chess is strategy, cooking is a fabulous way to practice capacity and liquid measurement, keep track of miles on a road trip and estimate travel time, measure and build a bird house, projects are fun, engaging, and math skills are utilized. Trips to the Children's Museum, Science Museum and others are another great way to spend some summer days.  Your own Mashpee Public Library has passes to offset the cost.  Just click this link:  MPL Museum Passes.

On the LAST DAY of school, June 20th, it is BLUE AND WHITE  DAY.  Please have students show off their Mashpee Pride.  Grade 6 students will be taking a "Walk of Honor" as they dismiss from Quashnet School for their final time. This march will be through the halls this year due to construction. Any Grade 6 families that would like to participate, please come to school by 11:25 AM.  Student dismissal is at 11:30 AM.

Thank you all for your support this year and for trusting us with your fabulous children each day. I wish you all a wonderful and safe summer. First day of school is Tuesday, September 4, 2018!

Respectfully,
Mrs. O'Brien
