March 4, 2018

Dear Quashnet School Community,

Change your clocks this coming Sunday, March 11th!

I hope everyone stayed safe during the crazy weather over the last couple of days, and that your power has been restored. Wow! What a weekend!

Monday, March 5th, as you know is an early release day for students with dismissal at 11:30 AM. If your child has any dismissal plans that deviate from their regular plans, please send in a note tomorrow. We want to be sure that all students get to where they are suppose to be going safely.

On Thursday, Superintendent DeBoer shared in her weekly email that all Mashpee schools will be participating in an emergency drill tomorrow.  The purpose of this drill is to help students and staff be prepared in the event of an emergency. Please remind your child(ren) that these drills are like fire drills.  We need to know where to go, what to do and how to behave or react in all emergency situations. As shared by Mrs. DeBoer, this was a planned drilled prior to the recent tragedy in Florida, but it does reaffirm the need to be prepared for all situations. Mashpee Police and Fire personnel will be with us tomorrow for the drill, so please do not be alarmed should you come to the school and see their vehicles or not get an immediate response from the office.

Regarding safety, please know that protocols are discussed and reinforced regularly with staff and students. If you are at the front door for example, you may see people walk right by you and not open the door.  This is hard, but the procedure is for the office to control entry to the building.  Students should not allow visitors in, and ALL visitors must wear a badge.  Just a reminder - after ringing the bell, please be prepared to share your name and purpose of your visit to school.

You may have heard that MMHS will participate in a #Enough student assembly for 17 minutes on March 14th as part of a National recognition day for the lives lost in Florida. This will only take place at the middle/high school level, not at Quashnet School. Quashnet School will participate in a Mashpee blue and white day  on March 14th to show our support of all students and school safety. One of the biggest threats to safety both in and out of schools is providing affordable mental health care. The following link is a resource for families should you be seeking support: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists. Feel free to call Mrs. Morrison, Mrs. McCue, or Mr. Withington, our outstanding team of Quashnet counselors, if you have questions or need additional support.

Now for some fun!  Thank you Mrs. Whiddon, Mrs. Blount, and Mrs. Avtges and all the wonderful Quashnet School team for their participation in the 2018 STEAM Night last Thursday night. Be sure to check out the pictures on the photo tab above.

On Friday, Grade 5 celebrated Wampanoag Day.  Students learn about and celebrate the rich culture of the Wampanoag Tribe. A special thank you to, retired Quashnet teacher, Mrs. Marlene Perry,  David Weeden, Grade 5 teachers and members of the Wampanoag Tribe for organizing this fabulous interactive day for Grade 5. The dancers are so skilled and engaging, thank you for your participation. This day was co-sponsored by the Quashnet School PTO and Mashpee Cultural Council.
