April 23, 2017

Dear Quashnet School Community,

It's a school night!
I hope vacation week was relaxing and rejuvenating for all.  We are truly in the home stretch now with the next day off being Memorial Day! The last two months of school are always packed with a lot of events, and  I will keep you up to date with all the dates! There is still a lot of learning to do as well - school is far from over!

Beginning on Tuesday, April 25th, students who missed any session of the ELA MCAS will be scheduled for a make up.  Mr. O'Connor will be administering the sessions with students each morning until they are complete.  The next round of MCAS will be for MATH which will be administered on Wednesday and Thursday, May 10th and 11th.  Just like in ELA, student participation in testing is critical.  Please make every effort to have your child(ren) in school and on time for testing days and all school days!

We hope you will be able to attend this week's annual Spelling Bee at Quashnet.  It is scheduled for Thursday, April 27th with the preliminary rounds beginning at 5:30 PM.  Our Spelling Bee committee selected words from Scripps National Spelling Bee grade level practice lists and from the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.  As in the past,  words will also be drawn from the 200 Most Commonly Misspelled Words list.  It is sure to be a nail-biter of a night! Good luck contestants and keep on studying! Practice bee is on Wednesday after school, 2:45 - 3:30.

Wishing all our wonderful student athletes great success at the Special Olympic Day Games this Thursday, April 27th at MMHS. Thank you Mrs. Strojny, Ms. Murray, Mrs. Fitzpatrick, Mrs. Everson and all the entire team for supporting our athletes.

Go Falcons!

May is going to bring some great events and happenings - a few are listed below.

May 1st, is an early release day for students with dismissal at 11:30 AM.  It is also Town Meeting at MMHS starting at 7 PM.  Please, please, please try to come to support Article 15, the Quashnet School Repair Project.  As shared earlier, the entire amount of the project, $10.5 million, will need to be approved to move to the next step to secure the rebate of 37.95% from the state.  Your VOTE counts both at Town Meeting and during the elections on May 16th.  If you have any questions about the project please send an email to mobrien@mpspk12.org or read the brochure at Quashnet School Informational Brochure -Repair Project.

May 17th -the very first Grade 3 music concert will be held in the gym at 6:00 PM.  It is sure to be a terrific event - more will be sent home this coming week to Grade 3 families.

May 20th -  PTO Parents Prom at Quashnet Valley Country Club - this is the prom event you have been dying for! Supporting the PTO is supporting your students.  All proceeds make their way into the classrooms in the form of supplies, presentations, field trips, etc. Thank you PTO for your continued support!

May 26th -  Quashnet School Career Day. This is a fabulous tradition at QS where parents, family and community members share their career, skills, and educational path they took to achieve their positions. If you are interested in participating, please contact Mrs. MacIntire at cmacintire@mpspk12.org

Great news on the Service Dog initiative - we have surpassed $9,000!  A total of $14,000 is needed to purchase a dog for a local veteran. Our student council will be working on raising funds to keep the program moving forward.  Donations are tax deductible through Heroes in Transition - contact Mrs. Emery if you need any information or have ideas for funding sources.  jemery@mpspk12.org.

This Wednesday, April 26th, is Administrative Professionals' Day.  I would be remiss not to mention our OUTSTANDING administrative professionals at Quashnet School.  Mrs. MacIntire, Mrs. Pagano, and Mrs. Emery go above and beyond every day.  I appreciate all they do to help our students, parents and staff. We are very fortunate to have such a high performing team.
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!

Wishing you all a wonderful and productive week ahead~
Respectfully,
Mrs. O'Brien
