March 19, 2017

Greetings Quashnet School Community,

Sugar Cookies by Mrs. Brown
Are you ready for some fun and exercise? Today's the day for our free family skating event at the Gallo Ice Arena. We are so fortunate to have such a great community partner like Gallo to donate the ice to Quashnet School from 5:00-6:30 PM - with free rental skates on top of it!
THANK YOU GALLO ICE ARENA, and our two Miss Keohanes for arranging this 2nd annual fabulous family event! The QS Student Council will be selling snacks to benefit the QS Service Dog Initiative. Any donations will graciously be accepted and applied to the dog fund with Heroes in Transition.

This coming Thursday night, March 23rd at 6:30 PM at MMHS is a district-wide music concert.
This is a wonderful event where all Mashpee musicians gather and perform together - grades 4-12.
Even if your child doesn't participate in the band, strings, or the chorus, it is quite a show.
Suggestion- get there early!

Do you have your tickets for Willy Wonka yet?  Next Friday at 7:00 PM and Saturday at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM our own Quashnet School Oompa Loompas will be performing along side the Blue Falcon Theatre Company in what is sure to be an entertaining event. I can't wait!

To celebrate Music in Our School we had quite the entertainment Thursday morning in anticipation
of St. Patrick's Day! Who knew Mrs. Pagano and Mrs. MacIntire were such good steppers!

Over the next two months, you will be hearing a lot about the Quashnet School windows, doors, and roofing project.  This picture of one of the issues outside a sixth grade classroom. During the heavy rain this week,  we started with a small puddle that was mopped up, next a pad was placed down to absorb more water that started to come in, and then another mopping and three pads were added! Unfortunately, the picture doesn't show the puddle that just flows past everything! The seals on the windows are gone, and when it rains we get wet inside creating a slipping hazard in the halls. Your vote is needed at the Annual May Town Meeting to support funding for this project.  Superintendent DeBoer, DPW Director Catherine Laurent, and I will be working together to educate the public about the current conditions within the building. We are planning an open house at Quashnet for the community to see the issues and gain community support.

Did you see the change in MCAS dates? The ELA MCAS dates have changed from May to April 11, 12, and 13. Student participation in MCAS is very important. During these dates please make every effort that your child is in school and on time.  In the event your child is sick, there will be make-up sessions scheduled after April vacation.

We are excited to welcome back Deputy Shaun Cahill to the fifth grade this week as the GREAT Program instructor. GREAT stands for Gang Resistance Education and Training. This is a highly recommended program and endorsed by many local law enforcement agencies and addiction prevention agencies and groups.  Deputy Cahill will meet with all fifth grade classrooms for 6 sessions, he joins the students for recess and lunch, and is a very positive role model for our students. It is GREAT to be working with Barnstable County Sheriff's Department again this year. Deputy Cahill does drive a marked cruiser to school, so please don't be alarmed if you come to school and the Sheriff's Department is here!

Spring begins tomorrow!  Monday, March 20, 2017, 4:30 PM EDT!

Let's hope this snow is over!
Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead!

Respectfully,
Mrs. O'Brien
