January 29, 2017

Greetings Quashnet School Community,

As I was posting the photos for this week, I couldn't help but say to myself, "Yes, indeed, it IS great to be in Mashpee!" Students were engaged in meaningful lessons prepared by dedicated teachers. Our K-Kids took the lead for Kindness Week by making over 600 bracelets for the entire school to wear, and they recited the Kindness pledge repeatedly throughout the week.  DJ Ooch was here on Tuesday and brought a lot of excitement and fun, but most importantly a message about bullying. There are a couple of videos from the performance on the photos tab. The Quashnet School Unified Basketball Teams did a great job in their games against Barnstable on Thursday. The gym was packed for the second annual PTO parent  and staff basketball game vs KCC. Unfortunately, even with the help of Mad Dog McBrien,  BFG,  the Baccaro & Pulsford Power,  plus many other talented staff and parents, we weren't able to earn the trophy this year, Honestly though, we are all WINNERS!  It was a great night!  Thank you Coach Rumberger, great effort from the whole QS team!

Thank you PTO and all families
for participating in this
FABULOUS QS and KCC event!

Great news!  All of our visiting Chinese Exchange students have found a home in Mashpee! Thank you for your support. This opportunity will provide all Quashnet students with a cultural exchange right here at school. The Year of the Rooster is sure looking good!  There will be a HOST FAMILY MEETING, tomorrow, January 30th at 6:00 PM in the QS Library. Wendy Wu, from Boston Ivy Global, will be here to share important host family information.

Service Dog Up Date:  After one week collecting right choice ticket donations from students to benefit the purchase of a service dog, over 2000 tickets were turned in by our wonderful students! Mrs. Broderick's third graders paid forward all of their tickets!  This is another example of our caring kids.  If you haven't checked it out, visit this website to learn more about how a service dog supports a veteran: Heroes in Transition .  We are in need of sponsors for our students. Many companies will sponsor community service projects, does yours? Please contact Mrs. Emery at 508-539-1550 if you have questions or contacts!  Thank you.

For all parents/guardians following the change in school start time, there is a School Committee meeting this Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 6:30 PM in the QS Library. Discussion and a vote is probable. Last week, there was an article in the Mashpee Enterprise reviewing the results of the survey.  Thank you for your participation in the survey.

SESSION 2 AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS BEGIN THIS WEEK - If you are unsure of a club meeting or your child's enrollment, please contact us asap for clarification.  It is wonderful to be able to provide these clubs for our students after school at no cost.  Your participation in the Stop and Shop A+ Program helps us cover some of the expense. We average about $1,500 per month in earnings through this program. The schedule for clubs is on the labeled Activities tab above and on the This Week tab as well.

I bet you could you have guessed that this FRIDAY is NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS DAY! Students and staff are encouraged to show their BEST Super Bowl spirit. If you don't have team gear, not to worry, red, white and blue works. It seems very odd not to be supporting the "Falcons!"  But.....GO PATS!!!!!

On a more serious note:  Parents PLEASE monitor your children's devices whether it's a phone, ipad, laptop, computer, etc. Not all students are making the best decision when texting, on snapchat, and musically to name a few apps. Last fall, Mr. Chris Santos shared a fabulous app to help parents in this struggle to protect their kids.

Never assume -  take steps to keep them safe,
know what they are doing, reading, and receiving.

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.  Will it be six more weeks of winter or is spring coming early?  Be sure to check out the groundhog on February 2nd!

Respectfully,
Mrs. O'Brien

PS - Grade 6 Students and Families, MMHS Program of Studies Night is Thursday at MMHS at 6:00 PM.  Hope to see you there!
