January 1, 2017

Happy New Year Quashnet Community!

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and a fun filled week off! On Tuesday, January 3rd we will be ready to hit the ground running.  Being to school on time and in everyday is a great resolution for 2017!

It is time to register for after school clubs for the 2nd session.  Session 2 clubs begin the week of January 30th.  Although most clubs meet for 16 sessions, some clubs meet for 4 or 8 weeks.  This is based on enrollment, or interest in the clubs. There are a couple of new clubs to consider.  Geography Club is with Mr. O'Connor and a parent volunteer. They have a fabulous array of activities planned. Mrs. Pons will be teaching a coding club for our 3rd and 4th graders using OSMOs, new robotics. Along with origami, Mrs. Richards has new 3D art projects planned, and Mrs. Geggatt will be using wooden looms for weaving along with basket making. Don't miss out on the Bananagram Challenge. Mrs. Avtges is putting together a team to complete in this engaging game within our school and then they will compete nationally online.  Mrs. Blount will begin the garden club in the makerspace lab using a grow light station.  Registration for clubs is open now and will close on January 13th  Confirmations will be sent out the week of January 23rd that will include the club name and dates of participation.  To access the registration form use this link: Session 2 QS Clubs.
K-Kids runs year round - no need to register at this time!

Congratulations to 3rd grader Addie Losh who raised $63.48 for the MSPCA Cape Cod. Along with a matching sponsor she was able to present a total donation of $126.96.  Outstanding! Thank you to all students who supported her efforts by donating extra change during lunch.  Quashnet kids care! Thank you to 6th grader Maya Brainson for her efforts in selling angels at lunch and various locations.  She raised over $300 for the Quashnet School Falcon Family Fund. With the amazing support from Southport residence, Dino, of Dino's Pizza, Cape Cod Church, Kiwanis, and many other caring citizens and staff, our Quashnet Fund giving capacity out surpassed every other year.  We are SO fortunate to be in such an amazing, caring, supportive, and connected community.

So many of you have commented on the lovely winter painting on the counter in the front office. Mrs. Richards is ready to lead budding artists to create their very own version of this masterpiece during a family paint night on Friday, January 20th from 6-8 PM. There is a $10 charge per painter to offset the cost of materials.  Click the link to register for this fabulous event.  There is a 50 painter limit for the night - so register early! Not to worry if it fills up fast, Mrs. Richards is planning for another paint night in the spring.  Please note - students must be accompanied by an adult. Click the link to sign up:   QS Paint Night Registration.

Your help is needed! Quashnet School will be welcoming 24 Chinese exchange students in February. Their arrival date is Tuesday, 2/7/17, and they leave us on Tuesday, 2/14/17 from school.  What a fabulous opportunity for your children to have a new friend, learn about a new culture, and be exposed to a new language.  Please stop in and read the short bios the students have sent.  I have included one below.  Give me a call (508-539-1550), stop in, or email (mobrien@mpspk12.org) so I can give you more detailed information and find a perfect match for your child. Please know that there is full support for you for the week the students are here.  Thank you for considering this fabulous opportunity.

Falcon Bucks sure turned out to be a great success! Congratulations PTO for another well done fundraiser. Mrs. Avtges and I really enjoyed our "day off" when Alexis and Anna stepped up for the job as principal and assistant principal for the day being the two top salespeople of Falcon Bucks.  This coming Friday, January 6th, third grade families are welcome to a movie night from 6-8 PM being the top grade level.  The biggest winners though are our students who will benefit from funds raised.  Thank you PTO for sponsoring DJ Ooch for a second year in a row and other great guest being planned! Looking forward to a fun filled basketball game coming up on Friday, January 27th - KCC vs QS.  It is an event not to miss!

Looking forward to a great year ahead with an amazing Quashnet School staff, the best students anywhere, and supportive families. Wishing you all the best for 2017!

Respectfully,
Mrs. O'Brien
