December 18, 2016

Dear Quashnet School Community,

Being the last post for 2016, I would like to thank students, families, and staff for all you do!  Everyday the Quashnet School teachers and staff come to school prepared to give their best. Students are ready to learn and grow. With a great home school connection we can support each other.  This last week was a great example of that.  The number of gingerbread structures for all to enjoy transformed our front lobby.  Thursday night's beautiful music recital highlighted the skills and interests of our music scholars.  Mrs. Guiggio, STEM teacher,  and Mrs. Pons, librarian, hosted MMHS  tech students under the leadership of Mrs. Hough. There were 200 QS family members who came on Friday night to enjoy a pasta supper with family and friends.  At the risk of sounding redundant, it sure is GREAT to be in Mashpee BECAUSE of the people, opportunities, and support for each other! Thank you for being the difference ~

This week ahead is a full academic week.  Although teachers may have planned special learning activities toward the end of the week, all lesson are tied to the learning standards and have learning outcomes.  That being said, it is important for students to be here this week, everyday, and on time! Friday, is a full day.  School will reopen after the holiday break on Tuesday, January 3, 2017.

Families often want to remember teachers and staff with a holiday gift.  Homemade cards of appreciation, a donation in a teacher's name to the hat and mitten drive, food drive, Falcon Family Fund to support those in need, or contributing toward the service dog initiative is a great way of showing appreciation.  Just a reminder, per the Wellness Policy, please do not send in candy, cupcakes, etc. for students to share with the class.

School Start Time is back in the news!  This Wednesday, 12/21, the School Committee will be hosting a public hearing on the topic starting at 6:30 PM in the QS library.  If you are for it, against it, or want more information, this is the time to be heard!  A vote is expected in January. The proposed start times for the 2017-18 school year are:  MMHS 8:30 AM; Quashnet School 9:00 AM; KCC 9:05 AM.

A couple of items to know this week:
1. Term 1 Recognition Awards will be distributed during lunch blocks on Wednesday for students who demonstrated consistent effort in class and had perfect attendance.  One student per grade level will receive the Falcon Award, for being a great school citizen.
2. School Committee Wed. 12/21 at 6:30 PM
3. Gingerbread Structure pickup is Mon - Wed.  Any structures remaining after 3:30 PM on  Wednesday, 12/21 will be disposed of.
4. Friday is UGLY SWEATER Day!

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays with an opportunity to relax and spend time with family and friends.  Let's look forward to a fabulous 2017!  Happy New Year!

Respectfully,
Mrs. O'Brien
