October 30, 2016

Dear Quashnet School Community,

I hope you have some time this week to stop in and visit the Book Fair in the QS Library. Our space has been transformed!  Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the cafeteria is open for families to enjoy breakfast together from 7:30-8:00 AM and then visit the fair together. I know you won't be disappointed  - it is arrrrrr-fully good! If you can't make it to school, books can also be purchased on line at http://www.scholastic.com/bf/quashnetelementaryschool1  Students will be visiting the fair during their scheduled Library time. Thank you PTO for the great work you do!

Were you surprised at the Light the Way backpacks? Wow!  What a great gift to our kids and how timely.  With Halloween tomorrow night and the time change coming up, the early nights are upon us. If out trick-or-treating, walking the dog, or playing outside in the evening, I hope everyone will wear some of the reflective gear.  Safety is a Falcon Five trait, and that is what Light the Way is all about.  Thank you Dino for helping us keep our kids safe!

Yes, Halloween is tomorrow evening. During the day we work to keep the focus on academics.  Please NO costumes, face paints, or candy during school. Beginning on Tuesday, if you find there is a surplus of candy or candy you don't want, this is K-Kids 15th year of collecting candy for the troops.  There will be a box near the front office where students can donate candy.  Each year the K-Kids sends out over 300 pounds of candy to military bases near and far.  If you have a loved one(s) deployed, please send in their name and address and they will be added to the list to receive this very special care package from Quashnet kids.
Mrs. Rastallis, one of our wonderful teachers, is also collecting pictures of students with loved ones who are veterans. These photos will be added to our Veteran's Day ceremony on November 10th. Veteran's do not need to be in uniform, it is wonderful when our Quashnet students and family members are in the photos as well.  Please identify the people in the photo.  If you are sending in a photo, it should be in an envelope with your child's name and homeroom labeled on it. To send photos electronically - please send them to jrastallis@mpspk12.org

If you are currently serving in the armed forces or know a veteran that would like to participate in our Veteran's Day Ceremony, please contact Mrs. Pagano by Friday, November 4th, at 508-539-1550 x4189.  Our all school assembly to acknowledge our honored guests will be on November 10th from 10 -11 AM.  We welcome all veterans to have lunch with 5th and 6th grade students from 11:05- 12:00 PM. Call or email if you have any questions.

Upcoming dates to know: November 8th, Election Day, is a teacher professional day with no school for students.  Friday, November 11th is Veteran's Day. Monday November 21st is an early release day for Parent/Teacher conferences. There will be no school on from Wed-Fri, November 23, 24, and 25 for Thanksgiving Break.

For planning purposes we want to give you ample time to schedule your Parent/Teacher conferences. The following link: Conference Registration  will bring you to a spreadsheet with all teachers listed. Just click on the link for your child(ren)'s teacher and follow the instructions.  In the past we have used SignupGenius, but they have changed their format. We are hopeful that with Google Forms this process will be just as easy. If you do have any questions or problems in signing up, Mrs. Emery or Mrs. Pagano will be able to assist you. The office number is 508-539-1550. Conferences are scheduled for Monday, November 21st and Thursday, December 1st.

Have you checked out phonesheriff.com yet? It is a great way to keep track of and monitor your minor's phone usage. FYI- Kik.com is a problem app - no one needs it! There are no parental controls and there is no way of authenticating users. Prime app for predators and bullies.  Check those devices and delete!

Thank you for taking the time to read the blog.  I hope you find it a helpful way to stay informed and connected.

Have a great week ahead, and I hope to see you at the book fair breakfast!
Happy Halloween!
Respectfully,
Mrs. O'Brien
