September 18, 2016

Dear Quashnet School Families and Staff,

We are finally entering our first full week of school!  Routines and classroom rules are in place.  The Falcon Five is fresh in our thoughts and practice.  Open House is behind us, and hopefully families know the classroom expectations for students.  This week students will be participating in benchmark assessments. Benchmarking allows teachers to determine where students are performing and plan instruction according to student need. These assessments are taken on Chromebooks for both reading and mathematics.  It is important that students give their best effort on these assessments so they accurately reflect the student's ability.  There is no studying required, a conversation with your child about applying their best effort is all that is needed!  Thank you for your support.

It was great to see all of you that were able to make Open House.  I know child care can be a challenge, but meeting the teacher, knowing expectations and learning outcomes by grade is important and makes a difference in your child's academic success.  If you were unable to make it, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teachers directly.  All teachers can be reached by email at  first initial, last name@mpspk12.org (Ex. mobrien@mpspk12.org. If you are looking to build that home library, books are still available in the front lobby this week - stop in any time. Thank you to ALL of our wonderful sixth grade volunteers who helped families navigate the halls of Quashnet!

This Wednesday, Sept. 21, we celebrate another outstanding tradition at Quashnet School.  It is the New Student and Family Breakfast beginning at 7:30 AM for those students in grades 3-6 who are new to Mashpee.  All new Mashpee students and family members are welcome.  Please be sure to RSVP on the notice that went home or call the Quashnet office at 508-539-1550.  Hope you can make it!

After school clubs are ready to go!  Please click the registration link below to sign up.
If you are registering your child for a club, please note that some clubs are limited by participants. We try very hard to accommodate  as many students as possible, and if a club has a very large interest we will try to split the class into smaller sessions to increase participation. Clubs are filled on a first come first serve basis.  A confirmation will be sent home to families before clubs start.  Fifth and Sixth graders participating in soccer should not sign up for any clubs meeting on Tuesday or Wednesday.

We have expanded K-Kids this year for students in Grades 3-6.  Did you know that the K in K-Kids is for Kiwanis?    This great service organization builds character and a spirit of community giving in children. Check out the link for information: K-Kids Organization. Quashnet School K-Kids even had a bill signed into law in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. No Name Calling Day  was initiated right here at Quashnet by fabulous Mashpee students and staff. Our K-Kids advisors are Mrs. Jackie Rastallis and Mrs. Lucinda McKay.  The club will meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month and is one of the clubs listed on the registration link above.

We are very fortunate to offer these clubs to students for no cost.  Some of the money raised from the Stop and Shop A+ Program helps to defray the cost.  If you haven't shared your Stop and Shop card number yet, please call Mrs. Emery at 508-539-1550 or click the link to directly register you card at Register Card. You might have seen Mrs. Emery and some of our sixth graders at Stop and Shop asking for numbers.  Thank you all for your service!  Family members can also register for Quashnet School, you do not have to be in Mashpee!

Mashpee is a connected community and one that always think of others.  There is evidence of this   all around town.

Dino Mitrokostas, of Dino's Sports Bar,  is one of those generous community supporters. He is having a fundraiser for Light the Way on Sunday, September 25th from 1-5 PM. Funds raised will go to provide children's reflective apparel for Cape Cod students in grades 3-8.  Yes, that includes ALL Quashnet School students.

We are looking forward to welcoming Dino to Quashnet School on October 24th for two assemblies for Light the Way.

Please consider supporting this worthwhile cause for the safety of all children.

Families are welcome!

I hope you have cleared your calendars for Friday evening.  The amazing QS and KCC PTOs have joined forces once again to plan a terrific family Welcome Back BBQ.  The field between the schools will be loaded with fun, food, and friends.  Come enjoy!

Wishing you all a productive week ahead-  See you Friday!
Respectfully,
Mrs. O'Brien
