April 10, 2016

Dear Quashnet School Community,

I hope you all have had an opportunity to participate in some of the wonderful events over the last several weeks.  Last week's talent show sure was terrific!  Under the leadership of our outstanding music teachers, Ms. Sherman and Mrs. Hill, our students were well prepared to showcase their interests and talents.  The audience was entertained by dancers, singer, musicians, a surfer,  a magician, and even a tap dancer.  Well done to all students who participated. Be sure to check out some of the performers on the picture tab above.  I commend their courage and confidence!  Of course with any performance it requires a team.  The Quashnet School staff were right there to support the effort to showcase our students.  THANK YOU!

Last Monday was the annual Staff vs Student Floor Hockey Game. The staff took the game, but the students were definitely the favored team by the audience. The first half went to the staff, but the students had a very strong finish. I sure hope the fifth grade students watched closely because next year they are going to have to take on Mr. Bedard, Mr. Hayward and the rest of the staff.  I know the teachers are very thankful there is only one game a year.  It is hard work to keep up with 36 six graders!
Outstanding effort on everyone's part and a special thank you to our ref, Mr. Franco.

Education is certainly not limited to classroom instruction. Participation in school activities helps build confidence,  self-esteem, and poise. We are very fortunate to have a variety of opportunities for students to participate in.  A sense of belonging, participation, being part of team, and friendships help students feel successful and can guide in making good choices.

Spelling Bee is coming up the week after vacation (Thursday, 4/28) - it is not too late to sign up. Words lists are available at lunch.

You know it is April when we are talking about RED SOX DAY! Tomorrow, April 11th, is opening day at Fenway Park and it is Red Sox day at Quashnet School.  Show your support for the home team with Red Sox apparel or wear team colors  of red, white, and blue.  Go Sox!

This is the last week before April vacation and it is an academic learning week!  Students will be engaged in academics and meeting learning objectives throughout the week, including Friday.  Being at school is important each and everyday.  Years ago, movies would be the norm before a vacation.  No longer!  Teachers work hard to vary their instruction and challenge students everyday. Please know that attendance matters, even before a vacation!

I do hope you all have a wonderful vacation with time to relax, rejuvenate, and spend time with family and friends.  Mashpee Public Library is a fabulous resource for day passes to museums, family activities, and of course books!
Patriots Day, Monday April 18th
Earth Day, Friday, April 22
Next blog will be on Sunday, April 24th

Words of wisdom from one of our Founding Fathers:

"Educate and inform the whole mass of the people... They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty."   Happy Birthday Thomas Jefferson - April 13, 1743

Have a wonderful and productive week ahead,
Respectfully,
Mrs. O'Brien
