October 9, 2022

Dear Quashnet School Community,

Monday, October 10, is a NO SCHOOL day in observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day. Indigenous Peoples' Day is an opportunity to recognize and honor the rich culture of the Native People including the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe.

This Tuesday and Wednesday, we will be partnering with the Tribal Education Department and the Yarmouth Minutemen to bring a hands-on learning opportunity to third and fifth-grade students. Students will be participating in this first-time event called 18th Century Through "Their" Eyes. Students will visit 6 stations and learn about life in Massachusetts during the Revolutionary War period. Three stations will bring a Wampanoag perspective and three stations will be presented from a colonial perspective. The War of Independence is taught in both Grades 3 and 5. A special thank you to fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Franklin, and Tribal educator Mr. Darius Coombs for making this special event come to life.

Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday, October 20, and Tuesday, October 25.  Conferences are an important time to discuss your child's progress in school.  Both days are early release days for students - parents/guardians please to use this link to schedule a time for your conference during one of those two days.

If you have any issues or challenges using this link, please call the Quashnet School office at 508-539-1550 and we will assist you.

Conferences should be scheduled with your child's homeroom teacher. Special educators, Title 1 Reading teacher, and the English Language teacher will be available for conferences with the homeroom teacher when applicable. Parents of students in Grades 5 and 6 should schedule a conference with the homeroom teacher. The homeroom teacher will have feedback for you from all core content teachers (ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies).

You are able to schedule conferences with school counselors and special subject teachers as well.

Student of the Week - Your child should be able to tell you why Friday is my favorite day of the week...well, it's because we celebrate Falcon Five leadership in our students!  Students are recommended for this recognition by any staff member. If your child is recognized for Student of the Week, be sure to read the back of the certificate to know the why. Some examples of recognition are: being RESPONSIBLE by completing all their classwork or homework, taking time to help a friend in a CARING way, being READY to learn and participate in class, being RESPECTFUL to others, and being SAFE with materials and equipment in school.

The school store is open on Thursdays. We are very grateful to our volunteers who assist students at the school store. The store is a part of our Positive Behavior Incentive System (PBIS).  Students earn Right Choice Tickets for being Safe, Responsible, Respectful, Ready, and Caring.  These tickets can be used in the school store as currency. Not only is it a way to reward positive behavior, but we also build financial literacy skills which are connected to Mashpee's Portrait of a Graduate. Students are able to spend their tickets weekly or save them for bigger items over time. If you see a prize coming home on a Thursday, be sure to ask about the school store.

Our fabulous K-Kids are at it again! They will be collecting Halloween candy for the troops. There will be a collection bin in the front lobby of the school to place any donations.

K-Kids are also looking for the names and addresses of family members or friends in the armed services that you would like to receive a Quashnet care package.
Please send names to our K-Kids advisor, Ms. Manning, at smanning@mpspk12.org. Each care package has candy and personalized notes from students. Quashnet students care!

The Scholastic Book Fair is coming, the book fair is coming!  Thank you, PTO, for organizing this fabulous annual event.  The book fair will be open from October 19 -26.  The PTO is looking for volunteers to help.  If you are able to give some time please email PTO President Amber Smith at qsptopresident@gmail.com.  The fair will be open to parents on both conference days.

Book Fair and Crazy Hat Bingo will be held on Friday, October 21. More details coming soon!

What would a book fair be without our literary pumpkins?  Thank you, Mrs. Pons, QS librarian, for organizing this fun family event.  Details can be printed  HERE.

Pumpkins will be displayed in the front lobby to be enjoyed by all.  There will be a few kits available in the school store as well.

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.

Respectfully,

Principal O'Brien
