A Message From QS librarian, Mrs. Pons:

In order to get the library ready for the end of the year, book checkout will stop on May 27, 2022. All books need to be returned by June 3 to allow enough time to reconcile inventory and process any lost books. Thank you for helping with this proess!

In the photos this week you see multiple pictures from the sixth-grade court field trip. This trip is not only memorable for students, but it is also definitely a favorite! In the past, we would partner with Stop and Shop and their loss prevention team to act out a theft. This year we were unable to do that and needed to improvise, and it is working out well.  The purpose of the trip is for students to understand the court process and the impact of making poor choices as well as building on competencies from the Portrait of a Graduate.

In each homeroom, students are assigned parts and act out a crime.  There is an arrest, and students go through a booking process at the police station, then go to juvenile court in Barnstable where students act as the judge, prosecutor, and defense attorney as they work through the case. There are students acting as parents and a student jury panel. This year, the students acting as thieves, stole earbuds and a phone charger from school.  You will see in this week's photos that the class was able to watch the theft occur on the school surveillance cameras, and then the process begins.

We are so appreciative of Office Kevin Frye and SRO Kate Hennessey who walk the students through this process from start to finish...and if you are wondering, our student actors are found delinquent each time by the jury of their peers.

Before returning to school, each class enjoys lunch at Dino's.  During their lunch, the students discuss the implications of poor choices and how they can impact present and future choices.

Thank you to Dino for being such an amazing community partner who has supported this field trip for numerous years.

Grade 5 students are building underwater rovers in science class.  They design their rovers and test their underwater maneuverability.  The rovers are mostly made out of PVC pipe, but other materials are needed to keep the rovers below the surface of the water. In a few weeks, the fifth graders will be traveling to Willowbend to test their design in the pool.  Another great community connection that we so appreciate. Students will not be swimming in the pool, just their rovers. This project is possible through the collaboration with Mrs. Mayen, Ms. Warren, and MMHS students, along with Mrs. Whiddon and Mrs. Hough.

This coming Thursday, May 26 is the Quashnet School Theatre Group's production of Peter Pan in the school cafetorium. Students have been working on their parts and practicing since the start of the Session 2 clubs in January under the leadership of Ms. Annessi. It is sure to be a crowd-pleaser! The show starts at 6:00 PM!

I would like to take a moment to recognize Mr. Gus Stickley.  If you haven't heard, Mr. Gus, as he is known around school, is retiring at the end of this month.  He was recognized at last Wednesday's School Committee for his years of service at Mashpee Public Schools.  Mr. Gus will be missed at Quashnet School as well as his creative cuisine. Pictured here is his original Falcon Cheese Steak! 😂

Mr. Gus loves to see students try new things and could often be seen asking students for feedback or passing around a taste of some new menu item.  During the COVID pandemic and even now, the demands on foodservice directors have been a challenge. Thank you Mr. Gus for always making sure our kids never went without and had great options even with a bag lunch program.

WE APPRECIATE YOU, Mr. Gus, and wish you ALL THE BEST in your new adventures!!

Have a wonderful week ahead! We all look forward to seeing our parent volunteers for Career Day this Friday.  Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend coming up!

Respectfully,

Principal O'Brien
