February 6, 2022

Dear Quashnet School Community,

Monday, February 7, 2022, is an early release day for students.  Student dismissal is at 12:30 PM. If there are any changes in the regular dismissal routine for your child, please send an email to qsattendance@mpspk12.org or send a note to school with your child. Early release days are a full day for teachers and staff who will be engaging in important training and work with a continued focus on improving student outcomes.

This week is National School Counseling Week.  We are SO fortunate to have a skilled and dedicated team of counselors at Quashnet School!  Mrs. Morrison, Ms. Maggiacomo, and Ms. Abrantes support students every day with navigating friendship, worries, calming strategies, focus, problem-solving, providing lunch-bunches, and the list goes on! 😊

The Quashnet family appreciates and values all they do!

Last Thursday, 25 students were inducted into the Quashnet School National Elementary Honor Society.  Only students in Grades 5 & 6 are eligible for participation.  Membership in the NEHS is based on four pillars, Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. Teacher recommendation is a requirement for participation, Math and ELA MCAS, Star scores, and report cards are evaluated. Students who are nominated must complete an application, including an essay. Members agree to commit to community service hours and attend NEHS meetings. The photo tab above includes photos from the event. Congratulations to our new inductees.

Two reminders from last week:

Grade 5 Parents/Guardians:
Please be sure to read the letter that was recently sent home regarding lessons on human growth and development that begin this week. In Grade 5, students learn about the human body. We encourage parents to preview the material, ask questions, and opt out of the lesson for their child if desired. Lessons on puberty in our school are based on biology - body changes and growth.

February is Black History Month! Over the course of the month, students will be learning about the amazing impact African-Americans have had on all of us. Over the course of the month, students will hear biographies of influential leaders such as, such as Rebeca Lee Crumpler, Benjamin Banneker, Charlotte E. Ray, James Armistead Lafayette, John Robinson, Alma Woodsey, and others.

As shared by Superintendent DeBoer, "Our Pre-K through grade 6 students will enjoy a different read-aloud each day celebrating black voices.  The calendar of Read-Alouds can be found here." Enjoy as a family read-aloud!

The Woods Hole Diversity Advisory Committee also offers these free events to all those interested.
