November 8, 2020

Greetings Quashnet School Community,

Did you feel today's earthquake?  Visit https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/  for more information and earthquake facts. 2020 is certainly an interesting year!
I hope everyone was able to get outside this beautiful weekend. The sunshine and warm weather is such a treat. This was a great time to take the opportunity to unplug which is SO important. Students are spending more time than ever on computers, especially during remote weeks. Taking a break is critical.

The American Academy of Pediatrics published these recommendations:

Based on the current information available, recommendations regarding media use should encourage self-regulation, such as:
  • Parents modeling healthy media use — including limiting phone interruptions.
  • Design a plan with children that includes media-free time and limits exposure one to two hours before bedtime.
  • Co-viewing media and discussing it when possible to enhance learning.
For more information on healthy technology usage, check out this article from the Americal Psychological Association https://www.apa.org/topics/healthy-technology-use-children.  Finding a good balance is key.

Below are TWO FABULOUS Quashnet School CLUB OPPORTUNITIES

K-Kids is a branch of Kiwanis International.  K-Kids is a student-led club that gives students an opportunity to positively impact their school and the greater community.  K-Kids projects in the past have included participating in Kindness Week, an annual Pennies for Patients fundraising Drive, and sending care packages to our troops in our annual Candy For the Troops program. While this year may look a little different, Ms. Manning and the K-Kids will find virtual ways to connect to our community and our school. K-Kids are encouraged to attend every week via Zoom to plan community service projects and to participate in special projects throughout the year in school and in our community.

Meetings are Thursdays 5-5:45 pm via Zoom and open to ALL Quashnet students.

Thursday, December 3 through Thursday, April 8

To participate or get more information: send an email to Ms. Manning, Grade 3 teacher, at smanning@mpspk12.org

Girls Who Code is a club for girls wanting to join a sisterhood of supportive peers and role models to learn computer science skills to change the world. We operate in a book club model in which we discuss a kid-friendly coding book and then learn and practice these skills using Scratch.

What if I don’t know how to code?

That’s okay! We will learn together how to create cool things that we dream up.

Who can join?

Girls in grades 3 through 6 may join.

When and How will we meet?

We will meet on Zoom every Wednesday at 5:00 for 16 weeks. Our first meeting will be on December 2.

Want more information? Check out this information slideshow.

To register: Contact Ms. Ream, English Language Teacher, at cream@mpspk12.org

Parents/guardians, we need your support.

If your child is scheduled to be in school as an in-person learner, it is important that they are in school. We do understand that students can zoom into class remotely, but when this is not planned, students do not have the necessary materials that they need at home as teachers have planned for their in-person participation.

The only time a student should not come to school during an in-person week is if they are ill. Attendance matters! Thank you for your understanding and support.

Veterans Day is Wednesday, November 11, 2020.

Tuesday, 11/10, is red, white and blue day. There will be no school this Wednesday, 11/11/20.

Quashnet School's annual Veterans Day Assembly has been canceled for this year, but students have been writing cards to Veterans near and far thanking them for their service.

Thank you to so many of our school community members including parents, staff, school committee members, volunteers, family members who have helped preserve our American freedoms.

November 16 - November 20 is Native American Week at all Mashpee Public Schools.  National RockYour Mocs day is Sunday, November 15th.

In order to celebrate and recognize our wonderful Quashnet Native American students, we invite the Falcon Cohort + Grade 3 to Rock Your Mocs and wear regalia on Friday, November 13, and the Mashpee cohort + Grade 3 to Rock Your Mocs and regalia on Monday, November 16. We will be participating in other activities throughout the week.

Please share your heritage and culture proudly so we can all learn from each other!
                                                                                      Wampanoag Day 2019

On Friday, Superintendent DeBoer shared this link to a quick survey. If you haven't done so already, please take a moment and share your thoughts.  Thank you!

Linked here is a quick parent/guardian “check-in” survey that we are asking you to complete for each of your children (MPS learners who are 100% remote, 100% in-person, or hybrid).

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead!

Respectfully,
Principal O'Brien

Bee Happy!
