June 14, 2020 - Flag Day

Dear Quashnet School Community,

You made it!
It is the last few days of the 2019-2020 school year.  The official last day of school is Thursday, June 18th. I know everyone is looking forward to summer this year, but students need to connect with teachers and finish up assignments through Wednesday, June 17 and... participate in our year-end SPIRIT WEEK!

DIRECTIONS FOR THE DRIVE-THROUGH
@ Quashnet School on JUNE 18th 1-2 PM

-Please do not get out of the car
-ENTER in the BUS entrance on Old Barnstable Road, NOT the regular entrance (it will be marked)
-Drive behind the building first, around the side near the garden, then up the runway - along the front curb
-Exit as normal

Teachers and staff will be stationed around the outside of the building- look for Grade 3 near the cafeteria, Grade 4 in the garden/grass area, Grade 5 out front, and Grade 6 near the front walkway.

HAVE FUN, BE SAFE, CELEBRATE school relationships, connections, and SUMMER!

Every year we do have some change in staffing.  This year three wonderful staff members will be retiring following years of dedicated service to Mashpee students and families.

Congratulations to Assistant Principal Suzanne Avtges on her retirement.  Over the last five years, Mrs. Avtges has worked extremely hard to help students, staff, and families at Quashnet School in her role as assistant principal, 504 Plan Coordinator, and primary organizer of MCAS. I can't express how grateful I am to Mrs. Avtges for all of her work and dedication. Mrs. Avtges has given 31 years to Mashpee students and the community.  Thank you for all you do and have done.  We will miss you! All the best for a well-deserved retirement!

Mrs. Coleen Blount will be retiring after a very successful teaching career.  As a Grade 6 teacher, Mrs. Blount puts her heart and soul into every one of her students. Her positivity, encouragement, always maintaining focus on learning while being kind and caring make her so special. She will be missed by all at Quashnet School. Congratulations Mrs. Blount on your retirement!

Mrs. Shelly Inglis retired as a paraprofessional this year. Her quiet, respectful support of students makes her a strong role model for all. Her impact on student learning will be felt for years by all of those who were fortunate enough to have worked with her. Mrs. Inglis's dedication, intelligence, and kindness will surely be missed at Quashnet School.

I would be remiss not to mention KCC Principal Paul LaBelle and MPS Business Manager Paul Funk, on their retirement this year.  Over the last several years Principal LaBelle has been such a fun, positive, and creative colleague whose passion for education and student-first philosophy has left his mark on Mashpee. Congratulations Mr. LaBelle, thank you for your partnership and leadership.

Mr. Funk is masterful at what he does. I can't thank him enough for supporting our students, our school, and for his ability to manage a strong budget. Thanks for never saying, no!

Congratulations to these outstanding colleagues!

In a traditional school year, Grade 6 students have several special events to celebrate their completion of elementary school and their readiness for middle school.  Well this year, as you know, has been anything but traditional.  But a HUGE SHOUT OUT TO THE QUASHNET PTO!!  THANK YOU for bringing SO many smiles to our sixth graders with your generous donation of the
CLASS OF 2026 t-shirts!

Go FALCONS - Go Soar!
A message to Grade 6 students -

Summer Reading:

How would you like to earn a coupon for a free ice cream cone from Polar Cave Ice Cream Parlor just for reading this summer?  Registration is now open for the Mashpee Public Library 2020 Online Summer Reading Challenge!

Quashnet students Grade 3 through Grade 6 are being asked to read for 20 minutes a day at least 5 days per week this summer.  20 minutes x 5 days x 10 weeks of summer = the goal of 1,000 minutes.  You can select your own reading materials including books, magazines, graphic novels, and audiobooks… any kind of reading counts!
Students will log the minutes that they read online and will earn a virtual badge for every 250 minutes.

There are four levels of accomplishment:
Bronze Medal Reader – over 500 minutes
Silver Medal Reader – over 1,000 minutes
Gold Medal Reader – over 2,000 minutes
Platinum Medal Reader – over 3,000 minutes

Each level of accomplishment provides a certificate for students to print out when returning to school. And what about that ice cream coupon?  Because of generous support from the Polar Cave Ice Cream Parlour, the Mashpee Public Library will mail a coupon to every student who reaches the goal of 1,000 minutes (Silver Medal Reader).

In order to participate in this summer reading challenge, patrons will be using the library’s new Online Reading Tracking Software called Beanstack.  Families or individuals can register at https://mashpeepubliclibrary.beanstack.org/ or by using the Beanstack Tracker App, that can be downloaded from either the iTunes Store or the Google Play Store.  The app is built specifically for mobile phones.

Readers of all ages can register today in seconds as individuals or a family.   Just sign up using your email address and create a password. One adult family member can register all the children in the family under one email address.  Actual logging begins June 17, 2020.  So join us online at the Mashpee Public Library this summer and then you will be headed for ice cream!

Thank you, students, for sticking with it this year. Staying connected to school is important and we can't wait to welcome you back! Summer reading is a must this year!

Thank you, families, for all of your support during this unprecedented time, supporting your children as you learned Google Classroom and more, and for your ongoing partnership. You are truly appreciated and valued.

Thank you, teachers, counselors, and ALL staff, for your focus on students first, your tireless work to figure out meaningful remote learning, and in reinforcing the importance of connections.  You amaze me every day!

Thank you, Sean Moroney, Suzy Brooks, and Holly Wilcox-Cline, for supporting everyone with our technology needs and keeping us connected electronically.

Thank you Gus Stickley, Tammy Leone (Cape Kids Meals), Jane Emery, Masonic Angels, Mashpee Kiwanis Club, for helping us help others with meals and more.

Thank you to our custodial staff who continue to work to keep our building clean, safe, and I know, will have our building ready for whatever September looks like!

Thank you to our district leaders, Superintendent DeBoer, Assistant Superintendent Hanscom, and Special Education Director Curley. Their ongoing support in ALL that we do is recognized and truly appreciated.

Although this is normally the last blog post until mid-August, I will be sharing school updates, events, and decisions for the 2020-2021 school year on this site.

Class placements for the 2020-2021 school year will be shared with families in August.

I hope you all stay healthy and strong.  Be safe and I wish you all a WONDERFUL summer season!

WITH GRATITUDE,
Principal O'Brien
