May 3, 2020

Dear Quashnet School Community,

Happy May!  Hopefully, the rain will begin to subside and those May flowers will come out to greet us!

Thank you, everyone, who answered the Family Survey that Dr. Hanscom sent to families this week. In case you missed the survey, here is a link. https://forms.gle/b6tdi68moED8Rt1u7.  Please know that every comment is read and we will use your feedback to adjust as needed.

I am happy to hear that the Grade-Level Google Classrooms are becoming easier to access for students and families. This has been a learning curve for everyone.

You may have received an invitation as a parent/guardian to join your child's Google Classroom. The advantage of joining as a parent is that you will receive an email summarizing the work that your child completed for the week and any outstanding assignments.  It is a way for you to monitor progress at home. The following link helps explain the guardian report to you in greater detail.  https://support.google.com/edu/classroom/answer/6388136?hl=en.  If you did not receive an invite and would like one, please contact your child(ren)'s teacher directly.

Mrs. Pons recorded a very helpful step by step video for students on turning in assignments and how to mark assignments as done on Google Classroom.  If that is a struggle in your home, be sure to check this out.   https://www.facebook.com/quashnet/videos/2984931098227142/

If you need additional help with anything Google, Mrs. Avtges is a fabulous resource.  She can be reached at  savtges@mpspk12.org.

Happy Staff Appreciation Week!

The first week in May is teacher and staff appreciation week.

Be on the lookout for these great signs around Mashpee, Falmouth, Sandwich, and many other local communities. Since we won't be IN school, the administration team wanted to show how grateful we are for the dedication of Team Mashpee!

THANK YOU - teachers, paraprofessionals, administrative assistants, counselors, recess monitors, nurses, therapists, school psychologists, assistant administrators, technology directors, support staff, Falcon Friends, and community volunteers.

Each year I am so impressed at the dedication of the Quashnet staff.  With the challenges this year, there is a whole new level of commitment and focus on supporting and teaching students. Team Mashpee works together and diligently works to do their very best to put students first.  I am grateful for each and everyone on this amazing team.

Even though the Mashpee Public Library is physically closed - it doesn't mean that our wonderful Mashpee librarians are not working hard. The following events and resources were shared by Mrs. Janet Burke, Youth Services Librarian.

Mashpee Public Library is having a Spring Into Reading Stay-at-Home Challenge and any age can participate, adults too!  We're using a new Online Reading Tracking Software called Beanstack where readers log the number of minutes they have read and then earn virtual badges.  https://mashpeepubliclibrary.org/2020/04/24/dont-miss-out-on-the-spring-into-reading-stay-at-home-reading-challenge/

The Mashpee Library is also offering a virtual LEGO Club for all ages.  https://mashpeepubliclibrary.org/2020/04/29/lego-club-virtual-block-party/

In addition, the library's Event Calendar is filled with virtual suggestions http://www.eventkeeper.com/mars/xpages/M/MASHPEE/ekmonth.cfm

If your families have any questions regarding these programs, feel free to contact Mrs. Burke at Mashpee Public Library directly at jburke@clamsnet.org.

Student Belongings

When school closed on March 13, 2020, students were expecting to return to school and as a result, they left many personal items behind. Classrooms have not been touched since then.

With the extension of the closure going through the end of the school year, we will be bagging up student belongings over the next two weeks to include items left in lockers and in the classrooms. Food items have been discarded.

Once all the belongings are gathered by school staff, families will be notified and you will be able to pick up these items. Please be on the lookout for this notice within the next two to three weeks. The process will be similar to the Meals To-Go program and the Chromebook loaner project.  You will be instructed to drive around behind the Quashnet School and we will bring a bag(s) out to you. Unfinished artwork will be kept in school and stored until September.  Mrs. Richards will make every effort to return Grade 6 student artwork to them.

Please know, we will be following all the recommended health requirements during this process. Lost and found will be held until September for students to reclaim any lost coats.

Year-End Recognition Awards

What do you do with school traditions when we are dealing with such an unpreceded event? School recognition awards at the end of the school year provide an opportunity to celebrate student academic achievement and character development.  The Quashnet School staff felt that even with a shortened year, this practice needed to continue.

The recognition awards have been modified to reflect student achievement through March 13, 2020.  Students will be asked, through a Google Form, to vote for two students with the Best Manners in their homeroom class. Teachers will recognize students for Citizenship, Special Subjects award, Grade Scholar, and Academic Excellence. The Perfect Attendance Award for the year will be calculated from September 3, 2019, through March 2, 2020.  This is the date the state is using to calculate attendance accountability for districts. Award recipients will be announced prior to the last day of school which is June 18th.

Next Sunday, May 10th is Mother's Day.

The greatest gift I ever received was my son.  I am so grateful to be called, mom.

I hope all of the Quashnet moms have a wonderful day filled with love and appreciation for the beautiful gifts around them.

Have a wonderful week ahead everyone.  Keep up the great work on Google and participating in Zoom calls. Be sure to reach out if you need support!

Respectfully,
Principal O'Brien
