January 19, 2020

Dear Quashnet School Community,

On Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, it is a great opportunity to reflect on how far we have come with civil rights, but also how much farther we need to go in terms of equality and respect for all. As adults, parents, and educators, we must lead by example to help our children value diversity and the uniqueness of each other.

Kindness Week kicks off on Tuesday, January 21. The Quashnet School Student Council is asking that all students and staff participate in these special events:

Tuesday - Pink Shirt Day  - Take a stand against bullying.

Wednesday - Black and White Day - We will be the same, but also totally unique.

Thursday - Inspirational Character Day -  Who inspires you to be your best?

Friday - Blue and White  Falcon Friday

The week will conclude with a family dance to celebrate Kindness in the QS cafe between 6-8 PM on Friday, January 24th.  Please come make kindness go round and round  #KindnessCarousel. The Student Council has planned multiple fun activities. Hop on board!

Wednesday is No Name-Calling Day. Did you know this was initiated by Quashnet School K-Kids?  Students at Quashnet School successfully lobbied to have No Name-Calling Day included in the anti-bullying bill which Governor Deval Patrick signed into law in 2011. Today, schools across the Commonwealth participate in anti-bullying events in their schools. Although every day should be a no name-calling day - this day brings a heightened focus on the power of words.

PTO has sponsored two assemblies for this Wednesday called Kindness Rocks. Thank you, PTO for always being a great example of spreading kindness round and round!

Two important reminders from last week:

Calling all Grade 6 Families -

The Program of Studies Night is set for Tuesday, January 28, 2020, starting at 5:30 PM. This is the informational night that was rescheduled from December.  I highly recommend that you make every attempt to attend with your sixth grader. This is the first of several opportunities that you and your child will have to ask questions, learn about 7th grade, and meet the amazing team at MMHS!

The club registration for Session 2 is ready!  Just click the link to the google form to register Session 2 Clubs.  Please note, the 3D Art club is usually very popular.  To accommodate as many students as possible, the class will meet for four 4-week sessions.  This will allow each group to make a piece of pottery and other 3D projects.

The Writing-On club is also on a different schedule than the rest of the clubs. This will be a series of engaging mini-lessons to help students reinforce their writing skills. This group will meet twice a week for a 9 week period. This is for all skill abilities and highly recommended. This will be a cross-curricular focus to build skills and reinforce strategies with high-interest content.

During Kindness Week, please consider to...

"Be the change you want to see in the world."

Respectfully,
Principal O'Brien
