January 6, 2019

Dear Quashnet School Community,

It is time to register for Session 2 After School Clubs. This link will bring you to the Google form to register: Session 2 Clubs 2019. Registration will be open for one-week closing on Sunday, 1/13/19. Confirmation of club participation will be sent home by January 25th. Space is limited in each club, and each club is filled on a first-come-first-serve basis. Clubs that are very popular may be broken into two 8-week sections to accommodate the greatest number of students.  Confirmation of club participation and meeting dates will be sent home to students by Friday, January 25th. If you have any questions at all, please call the office at 508-539-1550.

Construction Update:  We are 99.6% complete! Only a few punch list item still remain.  This last Friday, we welcomed Mashpee officials to tour the school and this coming Wednesday, January 9th, we will be hosting the Community Tour of the building upgrades @ 6:00 PM. All are welcome! The total scope of this project is impressive but easy to forget until you see the pictures. There is a link on the photo tab above with construction photos.  Check it out!  This project has been quite successful coming in under budget and being completed on time.

Music is in the air!  Please join us this Thursday, January 10th, for the first concert of the year. The Quashnet School choral students have been working hard to prepare for the winter concert which will be held at the MMHS auditorium.  This event is open to the entire school community.  Please plan on joining us as we celebrate these students and their musical talents.  The QS Band and Strings ensembles are preparing for their 2019 debut a week from Thursday, January 17th in the QS gym. Both performances begin at 6:00 PM.

Game on KCC! Calling all Quashnet parents and guardians who play basketball - or not! Your athletic skills are needed. It would be great to have that Falcon trophy back at Quashnet School.  Looking forward to another great game sponsored by our outstanding PTO on February 8th @ 6PM.  If you are interested in participating email heatherlakatos@msn.com.  Practices are Sunday morning @ 11:00 AM in the QS gym if you can make it - they are not required.

Monday, January 7, at 5:30 PM is the Quashnet School's chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) Induction Ceremony.  Qualifying Grade 5 and Grade 6 students will be recognized with this academic honor. Participation in NEHS is based on four tenets:  Scholarship, Responsibility, Leadership, and  Service. Scholarship is determined through MCAS (ELA, Mathematics, and Science) scores, STAR Benchmark Assessments (Reading and Math), and teacher recommendation. Responsibility and Leadership are demonstrated by consistently following the Falcon Five and being a role model to others in class and within the school community.  Some students have had the opportunity for Service, others have not. One aspect of membership is to serve the community through volunteer hours.  Mrs. Babich is the advisor to the NEHS and does an outstanding job guiding this group of students in all four tenets of scholarship, responsibility, leadership, and service.  Thank you, Mrs. Babich, and congratulations to our new inductees.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) -

Picture books are a great tool for talking to children (and adults) about feelings. The novel Wonders by RJ Palacio is a favorite of our fifth graders. Last year, it released as a movie too. This picture book, which is based on the novel,  really highlights how we are all unique and helps to recognize individual strengths.  Even sixth graders are not too old for a  picture book that leads to quality discussions.

Thank you, Mrs. McCue, our wonderful guidance counselor, who was awarded a grant for $500 to purchase a variety of books that help teach the 5 core competencies of social-emotional learning, which are:

     Self-awareness
     Self-management
     Responsible Decision Making
     Relationship Skills
     Social Awareness

Congratulations! These books are a great resource to all.

FYI - We are still waiting to hear from DESE regarding the waiver request for our missed school days in December.  If our request is declined, March 15th may be a 1/2 day school day for Quashnet students. We will keep you posted.

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.

Respectfully,
Mrs. O'Brien, Principal
