November 4, 2018

Dear Quashnet School Community,

How you changed your clocks yet?  It will be nice to gain that extra hour in the morning.  :-)

It is that time of year for parent/teacher conferences.  Please click on the link to sign up for your desired time:  Parent Teacher Conference Sign up.  Conferences are on November 29th and December 3rd.  Both days are early release days for students with an 11:30 AM dismissal.  Time slots fill quickly - select your time now!

This Tuesday, November 6th, is picture re-take day - not November 5th.  If your child was absent on picture day, they will have their picture taken on Tuesday.  If you were not happy with the pictures you received, please return them on Tuesday and your child will have their picture retaken.

Mrs. Stickley's Grade 3 Class
Thank you Falmouth Elks Lodge for once again supporting our third-grade students with their very own dictionaries.  This generous annual donation provides Quashnet scholars with a fabulous learning tool to use at home and school.  We are so appreciative of their generosity.

The Quashnet School annual Veterans Day assembly is this Friday, November 9th at 9:50 AM.  Students should dress in their red, white, and blue as we honor our family members and friends who currently serve or who have served in the armed forces. Veterans who will be participating are asked to arrive between 9:15 and 9:45 AM and are welcome to join students for lunch, following the assembly.

If you have any extra Halloween candy in your house, we are collecting it to send to deployed family members and friends.  Please send names and addresses of anyone you think would benefit from one of these Quashnet care packages to jrastallis@mpspk12.org.  Reminder: There is no school on Monday, November 12th in observance of Veterans Day. A visit to the National Cemetery in Bourne is moving remembrance and recognition of our veterans.

I cannot thank you all enough for your tremendous support of the PTO's Scholastic Book Fair.  It was a great week, and Tracy Fischer along with all the volunteers deserve a huge hand!  The money earned through Scholastic benefits every student at Quashnet.  New books are added to the teacher's classroom library, the library has new titles added to its collection, and other resources are provided to classrooms through a Scholastic catalog.  This is hard work. The staff and students APPRECIATE everyone's support.  We have also been receiving the receipts for sold Falcon Bucks - keep them coming!  We had many lucky winners last year - drawings are in December.

SEL - Social Emotional Learning

We have a new teaching tool at Quashnet School thanks to School Psychologist Christine Brown and our Occupational Therapist Kristy Maier. They researched and designed our own Sensory Walk.  This a section of a hallway that allows students an opportunity to take a break, refocus, and help regulate themselves if needed.  Students follow a path of hopscotch, to wall push-ups, leapfrog, and jumping turns.  The path ends at a water fountain where students are able to take a drink and then practice mindfulness strategies.  This isn't a tool needed for every learner, but for those that do, it can change the course of the day.  The evidence to support sensory walks includes:  building gross motor skills in students, increasing positive social interactions, enhanced memory functioning, and calming nerve/anxious or frustrated students.  There are additional photos of the sensory walk on the photo tab. We are fortunate to have such an innovative staff to support learners.

Did you know that K-Kids perform random acts of kindness around our school?

Deirdre, was the recipient this week of a random drawing for a cozy fleece blanket made by members of the Quashnet K-Kids. Congratulations!
The entire student body was entered into this drawing...just because.

Thank you K-Kids for contributing to a positive culture at Quashnet School!

Special request - If you have not completed your online re-registration for returning students, there is NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT.  Please take care of this asap.  For students to participate in field trips this MUST be completed.   Grade 4 students have a field trip on Wednesday - students without this information completed will not be able to attend.  If you need another access code or do not have the internet, please call the office at 508-539-1550 and we will be happy to assist you.

The colors of November are beautiful both outside and in our halls!

Have a wonderful week ahead.

Respectfully,

Mrs. O'Brien, Principal

PS - We are still collecting for the Fill the Van food drive.  Any donations can be dropped off in the front lobby.
