December 10, 2017

Dear Quashnet School Community,
If you are counting down until break, we have exactly 10 school days! Please know these are academic days.  Even though some special projects may be taking place, there is an academic goal attached to the activity.  This picture shows Mrs. Gorman's students calculating the surface area of their soon to be gingerbread house  creations to add to the Quashnet Gingerbread Village display.

This wet weekend provided a great opportunity to build a gingerbread creation at home. Did you get yours done?  These sugary creations can be dropped off beginning Monday, December 11th. The Quashnet elves have been hard at work setting up tables across from the office, and of course our office has been transformed! You can't miss it!

This Thursday evening, our school will be open for you to come and view the gingerbread display, join us for a delicious pasta dinner in the cafe, and have a memorable family photo taken by LifeTouch photographers. The festivities begin at 5:00 PM, dinner served starting at 5:30 PM.  Hope to see you there. We need a final count by Monday.  Send in a note or give us a call if you haven't sent in an RSVP - we just need a head count!   Hope to see you then!

It is so amazing to see the generosity of so many peoples over this season.  It truly is the magic of the season.  A local landscaper, E. J. Jaxtimer, donated 100 Christmas trees to families across the Cape. With the support from Barnstable County Sheriff's Department and our own Deputy Cahill, seven of those trees made it to Mashpee families. Perhaps you saw the article in the Mashpee Enterprise regarding the generosity of Southport residents - their kindness is astounding. Dino is a holiday hero again this year. With staff and community donations we are able to share and provide help through the Falcon Family Fund.  Mashpee Commons has donated a store front for the Mashpee Falcon Nest Annex.  What a great way to get your spirit wear. Along with your MMHS gear, Quashnet and KCC PTOs also have merchandise for sale at the Annex.  The community support for our students and families is another reason why it's GREAT to be in a connected Mashpee community!

Term 1 Reports Cards will be issued this Wednesday! Please take the time to review your child's progress with them. A student who earns a 2 is making progress toward achieving a standard - a 3 is meeting a standard. If there are any blanks on the report card it is because not all standards are assessed each term.  Please see the Progress Report/Report Card tab above for more info. If you have any questions regarding a grade, please be sure to contact the teacher.  A strong home/school connection supports student success.

One of the most important factors in student success is attendance.  It is important that students are at school every day and on time.  Students who are late are missing organizational time, morning meeting, instruction, or even a WIN group. Students who are dismissed regularly are missing the same instruction repeatedly.  Not being in school will hurt a student's academic progress. Yes, a work sheet can be made up, but not the instruction, discussion, feedback, and collaborative work with others. When planning vacations, ski trips, etc. please check the school calendar for vacation weeks/days that would not impact student learning.  Truly every minute of the instructional day is important.

We have received several calls about after school clubs.  Session 1 clubs end the week of January 22nd.  Session 2 sign ups will be sent out electronically the first week in January.  Session 2 clubs begin the week of January 29th.

Reminder to sign up for the Parent/Teacher PTO Basketball game.  Practice begins in January.  If you are interested in playing please contact Heather Lakatos at heatherlakatos@msn.com.

Let's have some fun and play some basketball!

Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate this year for the Mashpee Christmas Parade. Quashnet's "choral reef" was ready to march.  Thank you to Mrs. Hill, Mrs. Boyd, Mrs. Emery, and all the parents and students who helped with props and the practice.  We will be ready for 2018!

Have a wonderful week Quashnet community - we hope to see you this Thursday for a fun family dinner at the Quashnet cafe. Bring your smiles!

Respectfully,
Mrs. O'Brien
