June 5, 2016

Greetings Quashnet School Community,

There are some wonderful photos on the picture tab this week.  Colonial Day in fifth grade was outstanding! Thank you to Ms Dunnigan, grade five Special Education teacher, for all your work organizing the event. Mrs. Fullam's class enjoyed a visit from Mr. Jackson making volcanoes.  Fourth grade classes all visited the Cape Cod Canal Visitors Center. The Walk of Honor was extremely heart warming. MHS Seniors came to Quashnet is their caps and gowns to parade the halls. QS students clapped and cheered, seniors reminisced, and teachers had tears in their eyes.  It was a great day and the start of a wonderful new Mashpee tradition. It was great to have the KCC second graders in the house. Pictured here is our sixth grader Hunter Bonhenberger with his graduating cousins Kelly and Freddy.  So proud!

We are FULL of SPIRIT this week at Quashnet School.  Be sure to partake in the fun!

  • MONDAY -  Sports Day (student dismissal at 11:30 AM)
  • TUESDAY - Dress Like a Friend(s) Day
  • WEDNESDAY - Hawaiian Day - wear bright colors
  • THURSDAY - Neon Day
  • FRIDAY - Dress as your future career for Career Day
This week brings another round of field trips for our students. Grade 3 is heading to Plimouth Plantation. Grade 5 is going to go on a field experiment measuring water salinity and making observations from John's Pond to Waquoit Bay with several stops along the Quashnet/Moonakis River. I was so proud to hear from one of the Cape Cod Canal rangers how wonderful it is to host Mashpee students.  "They are always so well behaved." Sixth grade teachers heard the same comments from the staff at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.  You should certainly be proud - Quashnet students represent our school, town, and families respectfully and with pride.  Another reason it is GREAT to be in Mashpee!

On Wednesday, June 8th,
Mrs. Burke, from Mashpee Public Library, will be meeting with our Grade 3, 4 and 5 students to discuss the summer reading programGrade 2 students will meet with Mrs. Burke and Mrs. Smith before school is out at KCC. Summer reading is extremely important.  Without maintaining skills, students will lose substantial ground over the summer. This will be the second summer Quashnet School has partner with the Mashpee Public Library.  The feedback from both parents and students last year was extremely positive. Quashnet families should expect information to be sent home this Wednesday.   Grade 6 students will receive information on summer reading from MMHS before school is out. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING SUMMER READING!

We are all looking forward to welcoming many parents who will be at Quashnet this Friday for Career Day.  We value your time to come and share your careers with students.  As we work to prepare students to be college and career ready, it is so helpful for them to understand the pathway to various professions and to make
Grade 4 Cape Cod Canal Trip
connections with their own learning.  This wonderful opportunity wouldn't be what it is without Mrs. MacIntire's planning and organization. Looking forward to a great day!

Hope to see you on Thursday for the last concert of the year with a performance by the Grade 4-6 chorus students. Wishing you all a productive week ahead!

Respectfully,
Mrs. O'Brien
