Dear Quashnet School Community,
As you know, Monday, March 16th through Friday, March 20, our THIRD GRADERS will be participating in the online PARCC assessment.  The first three days of testing (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) will focus on assessing the third graders in the area of English/Language Arts—Literacy.  The last two days of testing (Thursday and Friday) will assess them in the area of Mathematics.  These assessments are designed to produce timely, actionable data for students, teachers, and parents, to test key skills, such as critical thinking, and a student's ability to problem-solve, and to assess and signal whether each student is on track for college or career success. I know that referencing college and career success for third graders seems a bit early, but the knowledge and skills our students are learning in third grade provide an important foundation for future learning.  Each school year builds upon the previous year’s learning and is equally important in getting every child to the final goal of graduating from high school prepared for success in college or in their career.  Each PARCC assessment is designed to be completed within a 75-minute block of time.  All testing at the Quashnet School has been scheduled to take place in the morning.  There are no changes to our third graders’ recess/lunch schedule.  Their special has been moved to 2:00 PM on each testing day.  Fifth graders will go to special at 9:55 AM each day this week.
We are asking for parent support during this school week.  Please make sure that your THIRD GRADER is present on all five of this week's testing days and that he/she arrives at school on time.  Test-takers should eat a healthy breakfast each day that includes protein to fuel them through the testing block.  They should arrive at school well-rested, having gone to bed at a reasonable hour.  Each tester should also bring in a plastic bottle of water.  Please reinforce with your third grader the importance of their giving their best effort during each day’s testing.  While test scores will not be reflected on a student’s report card, they will be analyzed and incorporated into our instructional planning for each student.  We have discussed the PARCC testing with our third graders and have emphasized the importance of working hard from start to finish on each day’s assessment—demonstrating stamina.  We are hopeful that every THIRD GRADER will be very proud of his/her effort and end each day’s testing session feeling good—knowing that they did their very best.
We have great confidence that our third graders are well-prepared for success on the PARCC tests.  They have the content knowledge, skills, and strategies--we just need our students to apply them with their best effort.  We greatly appreciate your support.  Your child needs to hear from you that these assessments matter.

OUR SCHOOL IS THE BEST because of our hard-working students, our supportive families, and our excellent staff!

PLEASE ATTEND our next QUASHNET SCHOOL PTO MEETING this Thursday, MARCH 19th at 6:00 PMThe topic of the meeting is planning our JUNE 13th FALCON 5K COLOR RUN.  We are hopeful that many parents will choose to be involved in planning this fun family fundraiser event and also will choose to participate in it as well.  It is going to be an outstanding experience for everyone!!

PLEASE MAKE READING A DAILY HABIT IN YOUR HOME.  PARENTS ARE THEIR CHILDREN'S MOST IMPORTANT ROLE MODELS.  WHEN CHILDREN SEE THEIR PARENTS READING ON A REGULAR BASIS AND DISCUSSING WHAT THEY READ, IT BECOMES A PRACTICE THAT CHILDREN ENGAGE IN AS WELL.  IT BECOMES PART OF YOUR FAMILY'S HOME CLIMATE.  PLEASE LET YOUR CHILDREN READ ALOUD TO YOU AND ALSO ENGAGE THEM IN DISCUSSION ABOUT WHAT THEY READ.  BEING A GOOD READER IS FOUNDATIONAL TO COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS AND SUCCESS.  BEING A SKILLED READER POSITIVELY IMPACTS ALL OTHER AREAS OF LEARNING.

QUASHNET SCHOOL SPELLING BEE:  WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29TH     All students in grades 3 - 6 are eligible to participate.  Permission slips will be sent home this week.  Once a student brings back a signed permission slip, he/she will receive their packet of words to study.  We will hold an after-school practice for the spelling bee on April 28th.

Last Thursday night's "Music in our Schools Month" Concert was an outstanding event.  Students in grades 4-12 displayed their musical talents in the MMHS gymnasium that was filled to the brim with families and friends.  Our students were outstanding!!  Thank you Mrs. Hill and Ms. Sherman for all your hard work in helping our students become so skilled.   Some pictures are included below.  Click above under the SY14-15 Pictures Tab for an album of all pictures taken at this wonderful event.
