Dear Quashnet School Community,
With three and a half weeks remaining in our second trimester it is time once again to reinforce with our students the importance of their taking ownership of their own learning.  By this we mean that students must always make their learning a priority, choosing to apply best effort, completing all assignments, and producing quality work.  Students are encouraged to seek help when they don’t understand a concept or directions.  We provide students with many learning supports and strategies throughout the school day to help them be successful learners, but to truly grow academically, each student must value his/her own learning process.  This important message begins in the home.  We ask that our parents review their child’s homework regularly.  If a paper is messy and appears to have been completed in haste, please ask your child to redo it.  Please ask your child questions about their learning and homework assignments.  Please interact on a regular basis with your child’s teacher in order to better support your child’s learning journey.  We also ask that you pay attention to your child’s online activities.  Too much time spent socializing via the Internet or cell phone definitely has a negative impact on learning—not only in terms of time spent away from learning, but also in terms of the sometimes distracting and negative “drama” that can result.  Pay attention to the content of your child’s incoming messages.  The important message that education is valued and that working hard is the expectation must be given in the home as well as in school.

Thank you to the outstanding and hard-working Quashnet School staff for volunteering their time planning for and attending last Thursday night's Family Math Night.  It was a very well-attended event with lots of smiles, laughter, and learning.  Winners of the Centerville Pie Company raffles were sixth grader Jessie Rullo, fifth grader Olivia Graven, fourth graders Piper and Jamie Hughes, and third grader Jake Bergonzi.  Winners of the Estimation Station were Nitana Perry, MacKenzie Perry, Kaitlyn Zaniewski (2), Conor Baron, and Jillian Burdge.  Winner of the Price is Right activity were Robert Ryder and Taylor Lacava.  Thank you to all of our families who attended this event.  Family engagement is very important to us and also very important to student learning.

SAVE THE DATE:  QUASHNET SCHOOL PTO MEETING--Thursday, MARCH 19th at 6:00 PM.  The topic of the meeting is planning our JUNE 13th COLOR RUN.  We are hopeful that many parents will choose to be involved in planning this fun family fundraiser event and also will choose to participate in it.  It is going to be an outstanding experience for everyone!!

PLEASE MAKE READING A DAILY HABIT IN YOUR HOME.  PARENTS ARE THEIR CHILDREN'S MOST IMPORTANT ROLE MODELS.  WHEN CHILDREN SEE THEIR PARENTS READING ON A REGULAR BASIS AND DISCUSSING WHAT THEY READ, IT BECOMES A PRACTICE THAT CHILDREN ENGAGE IN AS WELL.  IT BECOMES PART OF YOUR FAMILY'S HOME CLIMATE.  PLEASE LET YOUR CHILDREN READ ALOUD TO YOU AND ALSO ENGAGE THEM IN DISCUSSION ABOUT WHAT THEY READ.  BEING A GOOD READER IS FOUNDATIONAL TO COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS AND SUCCESS.  BEING A SKILLED READER POSITIVELY IMPACTS ALL OTHER AREAS OF LEARNING.

QUASHNET SCHOOL SPELLING BEE:  WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29TH
All students in grades 3 - 6 are eligible to participate.  Permission slips will be sent home this week.  Once a student brings back a signed permission slip, he/she will receive their packet of words to study.  We will hold an after-school practice for the spelling bee on April 28th.

Be mindful and make the most of every moment of every day.  Smile as often as you can.  Let those around you know how much you value their being in your life.  Read and learn something new every day.  Be your very best you!
With Gratitude,
Patty DeBoer
