It’s not the years in your life that count; it’s the life in your years--  Abraham Lincoln

GROWTH MINDSET: WITH TIME AND EFFORT I CAN IMPROVE!
DEAR FAMILIES:
We are so very grateful to our students and their families for supporting and valuing the MCAS assessment process.  Parents are the most important role models in a child’s life, and the messages that parents give to their child have the greatest impact.  On Tuesday, March 18th, the writing skills of our fourth graders were assessed through the long composition.  Our students worked extremely hard.  Their dedication to the process and application of best effort were clearly observed.  Students in grades three through six took the MCAS Reading/English Language Arts assessment last Thursday and Friday.  Student attendance was excellent on all testing days.  A special thank you to Mrs. Rozum, Mrs. Webb, Mrs. Burnell, Mrs. McGrory, Mrs.Sullivan, and Mrs. Phelan for volunteering their time to monitor hallway movement during testing.

Thank you to sixth grade teacher Mrs. Gilbert and the Quashnet School Student Council members for making every student feel special last Thursday.  The students and Mrs. Gilbert spent many recesses writing positive messages on sticky notes.  They then arrived early to school (7:30 AM) to put a sticky note on each student’s locker.  When students arrived, they were surprised to find a positive “feel good” message on their locker.  Our sixth grade Student Council members kept the entire plan a secret for several weeks.  It was an amazingly wonderful experience for everyone.

Coming Soon:  GEO CAPE COD CLUB
Fourth and fifth graders will have the opportunity to participate in our new GEO Cape Cod Club.  Thank you to parent Laura Howard who is volunteering her time to facilitate this club which will meet on Tuesdays after school beginning on April 8th.  Mrs. Howard will be presenting a geography-based curriculum and enrichment to foster global thinking skills. Flyers should be received by all fourth and fifth graders by Monday, March 24th.  Space is limited so if your child wishes to participate, please return the bottom portion of the flyer to the main office as soon as possible.
2014 QUASHNET SPELLING BEE (Update)
75 students have signed up to participate in this year’s Quashnet School Spelling Bee.  All students have received their packet of words—same packet for each student.  Even though the packet is divided by grade-level, all participants are expected to learn ALL words in the packet.  Our Spelling Bee will take place on Wednesday, April 30th.  Grade-level preliminary rounds will take place at 5:30 PM, and the final will take place at 6:30 PM. If any student would still like to participate, please pick up a permission slip from the main office.  Once returned, the student will receive the word packet.  Last year’s Spelling Bee was a wonderful event.

WELCOME HOME, MR. PALMER
It was a beautiful sunny day last Wednesday when the entire Quashnet School community welcomed home our Mr. Palmer.  Thank you to the Mashpee Police Department for providing Mr. Palmer with a police escort to school.  Thank you to the Mashpee Fire Department for providing us with the ladder truck and enormous American flag.  Mr. Palmer was very touched by his surprise celebration—an event that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.  Thank you to Mrs. MacIntire for planning this event.
Congratulations to Mr. Palmer and his Paralympic Curling Team.  We are very proud of them.
SUPPORT MMS 8TH GRADER FREDERICK HANNA AND PROJECT 351
DONATE CLOTHING YOUR CHILDREN HAVE OUTGROWN
Eighth grader Frederick Hanna is Mashpee’s representative on Governor Deval Patrick’s Project 351.  This year’s service project is focused on collecting gently used clean clothing that would fit babies and children up to age 12.  If your children have outgrown some of their clothes and you would like to donate them to a worthwhile project you can send the clothing to the Quashnet School.  Frederick’s sister, fifth grader Alinna, is coordinating the collection at our school.  We have a collection box outside our main office.  The donations will benefit disadvantaged children in partnership with another nonprofit, Cradles to Crayons.  Any donated clothing will be greatly appreciated.

March is Women's History Month.  This link is a great resource for learning more about some amazing women and how their work impacted the world. http://womenshistorymonth.gov/
