The Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Mathematics builds on the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The standards in the Massachusetts Framework are the culmination of an extended, broad-based effort to fulfill the charge issued by the states to create the next generation of pre-kindergarten through grade 12 standards in order to help ensure that all students are college and career ready in mathematics no later than the end of high school.

The 6 Guiding Principles for Mathematical Programs in Massachusetts—philosophical statements that underlie the standards and resources in the Curriculum Framework are:
ü  Principle 1—Learning:  Mathematical ideas should be explored in ways that stimulate curiosity, create enjoyment of mathematics, and develop depth of understanding.
ü  Principle 2—Teaching:  An effective mathematics program is based on a carefully designed set of content standards that are clear and specific, focused, and articulated over time as a coherent sequence.
ü  Principle 3—Technology:  Technology is an essential tool that should be used strategically in mathematics education.
ü  Principle 4—Equity:  All students should have a high quality mathematics program that prepares them for college and a career.
ü  Principle 5—Literacy Across the Content Areas:  An effective mathematics program builds upon and develops students’ literacy skills and knowledge.
ü  Principle 6—Assessment: Assessment of student learning in mathematics should take many forms to inform instruction and learning.

The 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice describe the varieties of expertise that all mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students.
         1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
    2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
    3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
    4. Model with mathematics.
    5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
    6. Attend to precision.
    7. Look for and make use of structure.
    8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

GROWTH MINDSET: WITH TIME AND EFFORT I CAN IMPROVE!
DEAR FAMILIES:
We are so very grateful to our students and their families for supporting and valuing the MCAS assessment process.  Parents are the most important role models in a child’s life, and the messages that parents give to their child have the greatest impact.  On Tuesday, March 18th, the writing skills of our fourth graders were assessed through the long composition.  Our students worked extremely hard.  Their dedication to the process and application of best effort were clearly observed.  Students in grades three through six took the MCAS Reading/English Language Arts assessment last Thursday and Friday.  Student attendance was excellent on all testing days.  A special thank you to Mrs. Rozum, Mrs. Webb, Mrs. Burnell, Mrs. McGrory, Mrs.Sullivan, and Mrs. Phelan for volunteering their time to monitor hallway movement during testing.

Thank you to sixth grade teacher Mrs. Gilbert and the Quashnet School Student Council members for making every student feel special last Thursday.  The students and Mrs. Gilbert spent many recesses writing positive messages on sticky notes.  They then arrived early to school (7:30 AM) to put a sticky note on each student’s locker.  When students arrived, they were surprised to find a positive “feel good” message on their locker.  Our sixth grade Student Council members kept the entire plan a secret for several weeks.  It was an amazingly wonderful experience for everyone.

Coming Soon:  GEO CAPE COD CLUB
Fourth and fifth graders will have the opportunity to participate in our new GEO Cape Cod Club.  Thank you to parent Laura Howard who is volunteering her time to facilitate this club which will meet on Tuesdays after school beginning on April 8th.  Mrs. Howard will be presenting a geography-based curriculum and enrichment to foster global thinking skills. Flyers should be received by all fourth and fifth graders by Monday, March 24th.  Space is limited so if your child wishes to participate, please return the bottom portion of the flyer to the main office as soon as possible.

WELCOME HOME, MR. PALMER
It was a beautiful sunny day last Wednesday when the entire Quashnet School community welcomed home our Mr. Palmer.  Thank you to the Mashpee Police Department for providing Mr. Palmer with a police escort to school.  Thank you to the Mashpee Fire Department for providing us with the ladder truck and enormous American flag.  Mr. Palmer was very touched by his surprise celebration—an event that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.  Thank you to Mrs. MacIntire for planning this event.
Congratulations to Mr. Palmer and his Paralympic Curling Team.  We are very proud of them.

GROWTH MINDSET: WITH TIME AND EFFORT I CAN IMPROVE!
DEAR FAMILIES:
THIS WEEK IS VERY IMPORTANT.
IT IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR STUDENTS TO DEMONSTRATE THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS THEY HAVE GAINED SO FAR THIS YEAR.
Tuesday of this week presents a wonderful opportunity for our intelligent, capable, creative, and hardworking fourth graders to demonstrate diligence and to showcase their excellent writing skills when they respond to this year’s MCAS Long Composition writing prompt.  While the MCAS Long Composition assessment is only administered to our fourth graders, the rest of the school is symbolically writing right alongside them.  We understand the extra effort, positive energy, and stamina needed to do well on this task.  We are confident that our fourth graders will succeed.  We know that the scorers will enjoy reading their essays and will be impressed by the quality thereof.
On Thursday and Friday of this week, all Quashnet students (Grades 3-6) will participate in the Reading/ELA MCAS Assessments.  Our students are well prepared and should feel confident and capable of demonstrating their skills and knowledge.  They have worked hard so far this year, and now it’s their time to shine!  These MCAS assessments are similar to other tests taken by our students throughout the school year.  Each assessment is designed to be completed in an hour or less; however, each session is untimed.  A student may have as much time as needed.  Students should carefully reread all text selections and double check their completed work before considering the task to be finished.  Our staff has been working very hard to help our students gain mastery of their grade’s common core Reading/ELA learning standards. These learning standards are the foundation of the MCAS assessments.
As with any test or performance, a positive attitude goes a long way towards success.  We are hopeful that parents will give their children words of encouragement and also reinforce the importance of excellent effort and perseverance.  We also ask that our families support our students by making sure they go to bed early and that they eat a nutritious breakfast each day.  All students need to arrive to school on time.  We encourage each student to bring a bottle of water (non-glass) to school each day.
OUR SCHOOL IS THE BEST—because of our hard-working students, our supportive families, and our excellent staff.
 MATH OLYMPIAD CLUB
Our Math Olympiad Club meets on Tuesdays after school.  Mrs. Pimental is looking for additional students to join this group. This club provides students with a fun way to apply and gain math knowledge and skills.  If you think your child would be interested, please let me know.
Pictured above is fifth grader Conor Baron.  He is grateful to the Mashpee community for the support he received for the Rocky’s Warriors project.  Four boxes of supplies are being shipped overseas to support military dogs.

GROWTH MINDSET: WITH TIME AND EFFORT I CAN IMPROVE!
Dear Quashnet Families,
Reaching goals requires a step-by-step approach—each step, no matter how small, is very important.  Doing the right thing every day requires discipline.  The pain of discipline weighs ounces; the pain of regret weighs tons.  It is difficult to do the right things on a daily basis.  It is important to pay attention to your daily choices.  We are all faced with 1000s of decisions each day.  Little choices, good or bad, done over a period of time create who you are and determine what goals you will reach.  What pain are you suffering—the pain of discipline or the pain of regret?  The pain of discipline is rewarding.  The pain of regret can weigh you down forever.  Short term pleasure = long term pain; Short term pain = long term pleasure (T.K. Dixon).  These thoughts are pretty inspiring to me.  All of our words and actions have value and meaning—to ourselves and to those around us.  Always strive to be your “BEST” you.
Helping Children Grow Up Healthy, Caring, and Responsible
The link below will take you to a chart showing 40 DEVELOPMENTAL ASSETS (Building Blocks of Healthy Development) that help young people (ages 8-12) grow up healthy, caring, and responsible.  Please review each of the assets.  Studies have shown that the number of assets youths report experiencing in their lives correlates strongly with their rate of substance use and abuse.  We must work together—family, school, and community—to ensure that all Quashnet students have positive outcomes.

Read Around the World
Third and fourth graders are invited to join the Quashnet School K-Kids as they read stories from different countries of the world.  As participants visit the different countries they will be entertained by the stories they hear and the discussions they have.  This wonderful event is taking place on Friday, March 14th, from 2:45 – 4:00 PM in the Quashnet cafeteria.  The cost is $3.00.  A snack will be provided.  All proceeds from this event will go to the Quashnet School K-Kids Book Donation Fund.  A flyer for this event will be distributed on Monday, March 10th to all third and fourth graders.

MAKE THE CHOICE TO STOP BULLYING TODAY!
Eliminating Bullying takes a TEAM EFFORT
Our Students, Our Families, Our School, Law Enforcement, and the Mashpee Community
Advice for Parents
(From the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Bullying Prevention Program)
v  Get involved with your child’s life outside of academics.  Know who your child’s friends and enemies are.
v  Shut down and turn off the computer at night.
v  Be aware of computer use and parental controls.
v  Re-charge all cell phones in the parent’s bedroom.
v  Learn the new technology before you give it to your child.
v  Establish guidelines about safe internet use.

 LOOK, LISTEN, LEARN.
ü  Look carefully at the technology your child uses.
ü  Look at your child’s group of friends.
ü  Listen to what your child says to you.
ü  Listen to what teachers and other concerned adults say regarding your child.
ü  Learn how to use the technology your child uses.
ü  Learn that bullying is not a part of growing up.
ü  Learn that bullying has long lasting implications for both the bullied and the bully.

Many of our students have a cell phone.  We understand that they provide parents and students with a level of comfort in case there is an emergency.  However, very few students have actually had an emergency requiring them to use the cell phone.  We are concerned by the number of students who acknowledge that they use their cell phones during the night—texting and talking—when parents assume they are fast asleep.  One impact of this practice is students who arrive to school already feeling “tired”–not rested and unprepared for academic achievement.  There is also the potential for emotional damage due to messages having negative or hurtful content.   It is so important for parents to closely monitor their child’s cell phone use—what is being sent and what is being received—text and pictures.  Ten, eleven, and twelve year olds are still learning how to make good choices.  A child acting out when asked by a parent to see the content of his/her incoming and outgoing messages is a warning sign.
Many students have large networks of “friends” on social networking sites.  Does your child know every single person on his/her friend list?  Parents must carefully monitor their child’s activity on social networking sites.  While your child may not be guilty of sending disturbing or inappropriate messages or pictures, the content of incoming messages can be quite harmful.
Reminder:   All phone and computer activity can never be truly deleted; all can be retrieved if necessary.
ADVICE FOR PARENTS: RECHARGE YOUR CHILD’S SMART PHONE AT NIGHT IN A LOCATION OTHER THAN HIS/HER BEDROOM—PREFERABLY IN YOUR ROOM.

School CancellationsIf a school day is cancelled due to poor weather, the following school day will be the missed day in our 6-Day cycle.

To be grateful for today and to be more mindful in your life, please watch this 10-minute video:

Dear Quashnet Families,
With only two weeks remaining in our second trimester it is time once again to reinforce with our students the importance of their taking ownership of their own learning.  By this we mean that students must make their learning a priority, choosing to apply best effort, completing all assignments, and producing quality work.  Students are encouraged to seek help when they don’t understand a concept or directions.  We provide students with many learning supports and strategies throughout the school day to help them be successful learners, but to truly grow academically, each student must value his/her own learning process.  This important message begins in the home.  We ask that our parents review their child’s homework regularly.  If a paper is messy and appears to have been completed in haste, please ask your child to redo it.  Please ask your child questions about their learning and homework assignments.  Please interact on a regular basis with your child’s teacher in order to better support your child’s learning journey.  We also ask that you pay attention to your child’s online activities.  Too much time spent socializing via the Internet or cell phone definitely has a negative impact on learning—not only in terms of time spent away from learning, but also in terms of the sometimes distracting and negative “drama” that can result.  Pay attention to the content of your child’s incoming messages.  The important message that education is valued and that working hard is the expectation must be given in the home as well as in school.
