September 4, 2022

Dear Quashnet School Community,

What a great start to a new year! It was wonderful to welcome students back to school last week and to be able to see all the smiling faces this year.

It's not just "back to normal" it is better!

Be sure to check the photo tab above for great pictures from the first and second day of school.

The picture above is from fifth-grade lunch and to the right is Mr. Bedard and his fourth-grade crew ready for a great year.

On the first day, Mr. Kehrl and I met with students in grade-level gatherings. The focus of this year is to lead with the Falcon Five. Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Ready, and Be Caring in all areas of the school and during the entire day.  BE is a verb, and it involves action. Always lead with the Falcon Five!

This Tuesday, September 6, is the Massachusetts State Primary Election in Massachusetts.  In Mashpee, residents vote at the Quashnet School gym.  There will be a police detail all day in the school and extra support during drop-off and pick-up times. The voting public is limited to the gym.  Access to the school and playground areas is restricted. We work very closely with Mashpee Police, Town Hall, and DPW to maintain a secure and safe learning environment for students and staff. Be aware of extra traffic.

Parent/Guardian Pick-Up

Thank you for completing the form to request a placard with your child's name for pick-up. The placard will be given to your child no later than this week. In case you missed it, the link is HERE

Thank you for your patience at drop-off and pick-up. Safety is the top priority.  Please stay in the line and we will get you out of the parking lot as soon as possible.  It is extremely important to pull up to the sign on the curb or as far as you can go. Doing this allows us to fill the greatest number of cars at once. PLEASE - DO NOT park and cross the line of traffic. Safety first!

For your planning purposes, the Boys and Girls Club will be open for before or after school care as of Monday, September 12.  Their open house is scheduled for Friday, September 9 from 5-7 PM. Students must be members to attend the B&G.

Mashpee Recreation offers before and after school care in the Quashnet School cafeteria each day. Contact Mashpee Rec for more information, https://mashpeema.myrec.com/info/

We are in the process of finalizing after-school club offerings for Session 1. Be sure to check the QS blog on Sunday, Sept. 11 to sign up for these free activities for students. Club participation is based on a first-come-first-serve basis, and letters will be sent home to confirm participation. The first week for clubs will be the week of September 26.  There will be two late buses available to students on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday beginning that week.

Quashnet School Open House
  Thursday, September 15, 2022
6:00 - 7:30 PM.

We will begin with a brief community meeting in the newly updated gym at 6:00 PM. After two years without being able to have an open house, we are so excited to welcome families back to school.  Meet the administration, teachers, PTO, Tribal Education representatives, the Girls Scouts, and more.

Why attend? You will see and hear about your child's day and learn the expectations for a new grade. You will not only meet the teacher(s) but also start to build a relationship and establish effective means of communication.  Why - to support your child and make this the best year of learning yet!

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!

Are you interested in joining the Quashnet School Council as a parent/guardian representative? The School Council is a small group of at least 3 parents, 2 to 3 staff members, and a community member representative that would meet with me once a month to discuss school policy, the school handbook, new school/district initiatives, and other relevant topics. The term can be up to three years or as long as you are a parent/guardian in the school. If you are able to volunteer or would like more information, I have included a link to complete a very brief form HERE. I look forward to working together for all students!

Reminders:

Last Sunday, Nurse Terri shared important health information on the blog. If you did not have a chance to read it, please be sure to look at last week's posting.

We still have a variety of backpacks available for students.  Please contact a counselor (mmorrison@mpspk12.org, plambert@mpsp12.org, lmaggiacomo@mpspk12.org), your child's teacher, or the office if your child is in need.

If there are any restrictions in regard to your child's dismissal, please email mobrien@mpspk12.org or qsattendance@mpspk12.org. Any new or updated custodial agreements should be shared with the school.

Be on the lookout for PTO board nomination papers coming this week.  Voting will take place on Sept. 15 - Open House.

PTO Back to School BBQ - Friday, September 16.

Enjoy the long holiday weekend! School resumes on Tuesday, 9/6/22.

Respectfully,

Principal O'Brien
