March 13, 2022

Dear Quashnet School Community,

Happy St. Patrick's Day this Thursday, March 17. May the luck of the Irish be with you all! Students, show your spirit and wear green on Thursday.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE...if you haven't completed the Family Survey yet, please take a few minutes to complete it tonight. Tonight is the LAST night for the form, and we haven't heard from enough of you! EVERY response is read and valued.

FAMILY SURVEY

Thank you for your support.

We were so fortunate this week to have had a visit from the Paws of Comfort Lions Club who brought Finnigan O'Malley and Luna Star for recess. The dogs showed off their skills in the gym for students who wanted to participate. Both dogs were also very generous allowing hugs from many students. Check out the photos on the tab above.

Both Finnigan and Luna are trained and certified as comfort dogs. They visit local schools, nursing homes, and hospitals, and we are hopeful their handlers will be able to make regular visits to Quashnet. During the recess blocks, students were able to visit the dogs in the gym and then head right back outside to play.  It is a win-win for everyone!

Thank you Ms. Maggiacomo for arranging this special treat!

CONGRATULATIONS COACH WHIDDON AND QS VEX-IQ ROBOTICS TEAM!

On Saturday, March 12, the QS VEX-IQ Robotics Team competed in the regional VEX-IQ finals in Hopkinton.  In our rookie year, it was a great finish for all.  Although our teams will not be moving on to Dallas for the finals, they learned so much from creativity, perseverance,  and teamwork.

The effort and dedication from this team are outstanding!

Robotics Club is open to all Grade 5 & 6 students, so get ready fourth graders - we will be looking for you next year!

In the fall, our school librarian, Mrs. Pons, was given a donation from our community partners at Southport to help diversify our library selection.

Here is a sample of some of the books we have received so far.

Understanding the world and people around us is critical in growing as a welcoming school and community.

Working to honor and celebrate diversity~

Our children, your children, never stop to amaze me! This month the QS Student Council and NEHS are leading the charge to support the children of Ukraine. The care and sensitivity I have seen for others by our students are both impressive and heartwarming. For the month of March, we are collecting change for UNICEF USA to benefit Ukrainian children specifically. Each homeroom has a container for coins or bills.  There are no classroom rewards or special events, the focus is to join together as a school community to help others in need.

A message from PTO: Next meeting is on Wednesday, 3/16/22,  at 10:00 AM in the Quashnet School office.

Grade 6 students completed a 13-week GREAT training last week.  GREAT is a program sponsored by the Barnstable County Sheriff's Department and taught by Deputy Sheriff Shaun Cahill. The GREAT Program teaches students about safe and responsible behaviors and the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and other unsafe behaviors.   Starting this week, Grade 5 will participate in a 6-week GREAT introductory course. Another valued community partner, thank you Barnstable County Sheriff's Department and Deputy Cahill.

Reminder:  There is NO SCHOOL for students on FRIDAY, MARCH 18.

Enjoy the long weekend!

Respectfully,

Principal O'Brien
