April 4, 2021

Dear Quashnet School Community,

Happy Easter! I hope you were all able to take some time off and appreciate the season.  The sun is shining, buds are beginning to swell, and daffodils (one of my favorites!) are in full bloom.

It has renewed meaning to say this IS a school night for ALL of our Grade 3-5 students!  Tomorrow, April 5, students in Grades 3 - 5, Grade 6 Falcon cohort and sixth graders with an IEP are to report to school.  Classrooms are ready and the lunchrooms in the cafe and gym are set to go! A few things to remember:

1.  Masks MUST be worn on the bus and in school at all times - the only exception is for lunch or a scheduled mask break.

2. Masks should fit to cover the nose and mouth and students should have at least one extra mask with them.

3. Students in Grade 4 and 5 need to bring their Chromebooks to school FULLY CHARGED each day.

4. Material bags still need to travel with students to and from school each day. We all need to be prepared to learn at home if needed and students will not be issued new materials - please keep those blue bags in use!

5. Superintendent DeBoer shared the NEW BUS ROUTES and TIMES - please review, the link is HEREThese new routes and times begin tomorrow, April 5, and some students have been assigned to a new bus. Please check it out and share changes with your child.

6. Lunch will continue to be free for all students. We are very grateful to Mr. Gus and the entire foodservice crew for the great lunches being provided each day.

7. Every student should have a water bottle with their name on it.  The water fountains will remain closed, but the bottle fillers are available to students. We do have a limited supply at school - if your child needs one, they can visit the office.

8. If your child is coming to school for the first time tomorrow, we will be on the lookout to help them find their classroom. Just like the first day of school all over again, all hands will be on deck to support students.

9. There will be NO change in parent drop-off or pickup.  Thank you in advance for your patience. We will work hard to move the line quickly and efficiently, but most of all SAFELY. PLEASE do not park unless there is a special need or circumstance. We all appreciate your support and cooperation with this.

To help move the line quickly - PULL UP all the way to the far light post.  A sign will be outside and you will see me waving you up.  THANK YOU!

10. We do still have some 100% remote learners - and yes, you matter too!  Remote learning will look different for students in Grades 4 and 5 this week. Students should check in with their teachers in the morning as usual, but there will be more asynchronous learning time.  Teachers will not be zooming their lessons. Teacher playlist will be maintained and remote students will follow that plan. Remote students can expect approximately 45 minutes a day with their class and teacher. Your child's teacher will help guide the check-in times.

*There is NO CHANGE for the Grade 6 Mashpee cohort this week - they should sign on to zoom as usual! The remote changes will not happen for Grade 6 until the week of April 12.

We are a TEAM- teachers, staff, students, parent/guardians, the entire MPS, and the Quashnet community.  We are in this TOGETHER, and TOGETHER we ARE #QuashnetStrong

Congratulations to Mr. Souza's Grade 3 students.  Together, they collected 509 items for the food drive over the last two weeks.  Amazing job!

Collectively, the Quashnet School students brought in a total of 1,619 items to donate to local food pantries. A true community of caring.

Thank you to the QS Student Council, K-Kids, and MMHS for organizing this effort to support others!

The top five classrooms were:

1. Mr. Souza Grade 3
2. Mrs. Arsenault Grade 3
3. Ms. Alves Grade 6
4. Mrs. Stroshine Grade 4
5. Mrs. Broderick Grade 3

Last week I shared two important resources for families from Keeping Kids Safe and Secure Online - this week, please read these critical reminders about Social Media and Who Are Your Kids Talking to Online

We are all looking forward to our "first day" of school tomorrow! As always, we are all here for you.  Reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or something to share!

Respectfully,

Principal O'Brien
