December 17, 2017

Dear Quashnet School Community,

It was absolutely wonderful to see so many families for the pasta supper last week. Knowing your community members, being connected, talking and laughing together helps to make a stronger community. Thank you for being a part of it!  It was also great to see all of the gingerbread structures.  School smelled so good and looked so festive!  Gingerbread structures should be picked up by Monday, December 18th. As soon as I get the family photos, I will be sure to share them electronically. It would be impossible to have this event without the support of the staff.  The Quashnet staff is not only great at teaching students, but also at giving their time to support our school community.  Mr. Gus Stickley's culinary skills were evident again with the delicious food - he is an amazing school partner who always goes the extra mile.  Please keep in mind this holiday season, the BEST gift you can give anyone is your time - and it's free! Thank you everyone for giving yours.

Congratulations to Nancy Curtin, the lucky winner of the QS Patriot Basket. Superintendent DeBoer pulled the winning ticket during dinner on Thursday.  Mrs. Johnson, Ms. Forsberg, Mrs. Emery and their team of volunteers, sold $1,100 worth of raffle tickets.  In case you are wondering why we always have an even number in donations, a generous someone or many work together to always "round it up!" The basket was filled with Patriot gear, a bear, a chair, and tickets to the Christmas Eve Patriots game generously donated by Bryan Morry - Go Pats!  100% of those proceeds go to help our Falcon families over the year as needs arise.  SO AWESOME to be at QUASHNET and GREAT to be in MASHPEE!

It is important to know that this is a full week of school.  All five days are academic days and it is important for students to be here.  Although there are some special projects in classrooms, they are purposeful and connected to learning standards. This Wednesday, during grade level lunches we will have our first term student recognition awards.  Students will be recognized for perfect attendance, effort, and the Falcon Awards will be presented. There was a change in the handbook this year which defines Perfect Attendance as being in school on time each day and not being dismissed during the term.  Even with these higher standards - we have more students than ever getting this recognition.  GO team Quashnet!  The Effort Award is given to students who consistently demonstrate great effort - something we can all strive for. Student of the Week recognizes students throughout the term who have achieved a goal.  The Falcon Award, formerly known as the Good Egg Award, is given to one student in each grade level.  They are nominated by anyone in the school, students, teachers, staff and the students exemplify the Falcon Five in all they do.

Are you busy this Tuesday night?  The MMHS boys' and girls' basketball teams will be playing at the Wampanoag Community and Government Center on Great Neck Road South. The girls take to court first at 5:00 PM and the boys follow at 6:30 PM. Thank you to the Wampanoag Tribal Council for hosting this first time event. If you haven't been to the Community Center, it is beautiful and, as it should be a, great source of pride for the Wampanoag community. Stop in to cheer on our Falcons and see this beautiful building.  Did you know that every Thursday the Indian Education program comes to Quashnet School during grade level lunch blocks? Aunt Toodie works with our Native American students and friends to teach the Wampanoag reclaimed language, culture and Wampanoag games. The picture on the left shows some fifth grade students in front of the banner that they had planned to carry in the Mashpee Christmas Parade. The photo on the right shows Toodie playing a game with sixth graders.

As you are aware, school will not be in session next week or on January 1.  School will resume on Tuesday, January 2, 2018.  There will be NO blog next Sunday, you will hear from me on Sunday, December 31st. I sincerely wish you a safe and wonderful holiday break to spend time with family and friends - relax, rejuvenate, and be merry!  If you are looking for activities over the break, be sure to check out the Mashpee Public Library.  Not only do they have great books but also special activities and backpack kits -how fun!  Mrs. Burke, the children's librarian, is sending home this flyer this week with a list of special STEM events coming soon.  Be sure to check out these great community offerings.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays
to our wonderful Falcon community!

Respectfully,
   Mrs. O'Brien
